I'm having issues getting Assassin's Creed 2 detect my wireless 360 controller

It sees the controller and I choose the correct mappings:

But no inputs from the controller work. I cannot navigate the menu nor the game.

I have the latest drivers, the wireless "hack" and I confirmed that it works with another game (Beat Hazard) and app (Steam Big Picture) so it can't be a win8 issue.

Edit: Also does anyone know how I can just launch the game directly from Big Picture and not go through that annoying uPlay launcher?
