When it comes to NWN, it's all about the community mods and modules on Neverwinter Vault. There are a lot of great modules out there that cater to all kinds of gameplay (be it hack & slash, story, or both). I'd recommend taking a look at Adam Miller's work (Shadowlords, Dreamcatcher, and Demon) as a start. There's also the premium modules on Bioware's site. Sure they cost money, but they are quality work. DLA's Wyvern Crown of Cormyr was an amazing module that brought in a lot of things that weren't supposed to be possible into NWN, so I'd definitely recommend that one. I don't do much multiplayer myself, but persistent worlds are a big part of the NWN community, so you could look into that too.

The reason you are confused by number 3 is because Bateluer was confused as well (or really didnt read it).
Nobody said jack about texture quality. In point number 3 I was talking about the detail of the game itself and the interactivity. The game world in BG2 had all kinds of interesting people and objects to play with.
NWN had very little and what was there wasnt too interesting.
EDIT: The texture and 3D detail in NWN 2 was certainly superior and made the world look nice, but looking nice was a bad thing for Oblivion as well. You can run around all day in Oblivion and NWN 2 and be impressed by the pretty colors. I was impressed by the graphics for about 3 minutes, then I wanted to play a fun game.
I was disappointed.

I think maybe Bateluer just wanted to make "points" and had to pretend he was a politician to do it. He started and ended his own argument so he could win it.
I dont mind it so much when AT members do it but politicians have been doing it for way too long and I'm getting tired.

Which is what I was trying to explain. At that point in time, computers were not powerful to render that level of detail. If Bioware had tried to build the level of detail into NWN, it would have brought even the most powerful computer to a crawl. I am not referring to texture quality or other graphical details. I was referring to the objects in the environment. The city of Athkatla seemed alive with activity, whereas cities in NWN1 seemed like ghost towns by comparison. Perhaps I didn't do a good enough job of explaining it though.

In more recent NWN1 and NWN2 mods, the community has created living cities.

Oblivion is doing that, quite nicely, but I'm finding it more and more difficult to motivate myself to play twitch games.

That's bad. To assume that an AI will play with any reasonable measure of intelligence is foolish. All party members should be under the control of a person.

4. Won't disagree with you here, there were some aspects of the 2e rules that many people liked better than the simpler 3e and 3.5e rules. NWN2's party control is far from perfect, but its still far better than the standard henchmen system found in most 'RPG' titles today. At least I have full control over my party members inventory, equipment, and movement. Their AI needs some work though, which has been addressed in community mods, so its not really as big an issue as some would claim.

I once heard it said that BG adhered to 2.0 rules better than NWN adhered to 3.0 rules. I've never played 3.0, but it worked 'ok.'

The one wonky thing I really didn't like was the rest system. The idea that you regain full health in a 15 second sit down, with monsters just across the river, was dumb and the community fix didn't resolve the problem.

To conclude, NWN2 is a diamond in the rough. With some polish, it could be the greatest RPG since Planescape Torment. NWN1, with its unrivaled quantities of user made content places it in the top 3 CRPGs ever made, right behind Torment and BG2.

I might look into it.

The beginning of neverwinter nights 2 is horrible. I hate it, but the game really starts to pick up after about half way through the 1st act.

I found it a bit hard to get into, but it played differently enough that I had some fun, and I have to say I've rarely seen a game (the campaign) so maligned that I thought was fine - but the caveat is that I only played chapter 1, when the tragic event (not to post a spoiler) happened at the beginning of chapter 2 it turned me off to playing more. But I thought the campaign in chapter 1 was better than the average RPG...

One other thing I noticed, some classes seemed to do a lot better than others. A rogue main had a hard time on the spider boss, while a 'recommended' combo did it ok.

The only other game I can think of that I thought was so overly criticized was Lionheart, again with the caveat that I only played the first part, not the grind.
