which one is better or is onboard not as good as offboard?

I am looking at a P4 mobo that has either on it and have to order by tonight

Just buy one with onboard RAID controller. Runs just as fast, costs cheaper, and less hassles.

Which chipsets are you looking at? I wouldn't recommend the 845, unless it's the DDR version.

Onboard RAID is usually Lite version. PCI cards include full spec. Ability to change block size and run >2 drives is often compromised in the Lite ones. There often seem to be problems with conflicts and the like with the onboard ones too (e.g. Promise + GF3). If you already have a PCI Promise (FastTrax?) ATA100, keep it.

BTW, 'Lite' is such a ghastly spelling. Do Americans write 'lite' or 'light' when they mean something what weighs little?

Hehehh... it's always been 'light'

Some popular site ran benchmarks between on-board RAID controllers, specifically the Promise and Highpoint chipsets. From what i recall, the performance difference between the two wasn't eye-popping, but the Highpoint slightly came out ahead in terms of raw speed.
