I'm grossly underpaid at work.

Don't walk into a negotiation situation like that unless you're able to walk away from it.

That is to say, have alternate job offers or at least a good amount of interest in you indicated before you make a move.

I don't work at Mcdonalds. ahhaahhah

I work for a small software company. I fear that others from my co read this forum, so i don't really want to post so many details. let's just say that i checked salary.com and i'm not even making close to the LOW end of the scale.

i'm tired of working my ass off for empty promises....

I have not went out to find job offers from anywhere else, but iam prepared to walk. i will be sending out my resume starting now.

argh. 🙁

Well I accidentally pressed the reply button on the bottom when I meant to press the next page button.. don?t as me how. Well I don?t know how to delete this so I will just edit it and tell you all what I do and how much I get paid. I have 2 jobs.

1. Pizza delivery boy for pizza hut- 6.50 an hour plus tips and gas money which totals to ~ 15/hour

2. IT Tech at a local Alcoa Plant (they make aluminum)- 10/hour

Get better job offers and drop them on your boss' desk along with why you should be earning more. Be prepared to back up your demands with action.

Never demand more money unless you are fully willing and ready to give a two weeks notice if your demands are not met or a favorable compromise is not found.

When I turned in my resignation letter at my old job they were suddenly interested in paying me more.

hmmm not a good idea.. If you threaten to leave and they make a counter offer that you accept, they will begin looking for your replacement IMMEDIATELY.

Accipiter you are right on. I am the boss for a company of about 100 people, and the last thing you want to do when negotiating with me is even hint that you are looking elsewhere. That will gain you an immediate layoff notice. On the other hand, I have no problem with someone coming to me and presenting a case on how they have taken on additional responsibilities and have a strong work ethic. These people will be rewarded.

ask your boss what you need to do to get a raise

or better yet...show initiative and do what it takes to get a raise without asking! If you ask your boss what it takes to get a raise and you do it, he/she will know that you did that only to get a raise. If you do it without asking, then he'll really think that you're going out of your way to help out the company and make him look better. I recently suggested a bunch of ideas that saved my company thousands of dollars per year on expenses. We implemented most of them and I got a raise shortly thereafter. I then volunteered to go to Chicago on a business trip to help a sales person, when that's not even in my job description (but I knew we were short handed). I got a raise again.

Show initiative and some out of the box thinking that sets you apart from everyone else that do the same thing that you're doing. It WILL get noticed.

Been there, done that. Your slice of the pie will be a little bigger than the adjusted-for-inflation slice, but not much. It's definitely not a "reward."

Of course, it depends on the company, but they are never going to go out of their way to pay you more than they can get away with. You have to take the initiative.

D1gger it sounds like i will approach the way you state it...

pisaabird i make more than all the others my same level

trey22 i dont' want to go into too many details, but i literally started up the entire support division for my co.

govtcheez75 that sounds like a great place to work. 😀

JLGatsby i have my side businesses that get me through paying the bills. 🙂

Forward this thread to your bosses email.

Seriously, I've never had a raise worth a damn. All my raises have been career/job changes. I've always moved forward with every change, never backwards.

Yea, I know I'm lucky so far. However, now I'm self employed.

Thus far you've done a crappy and less than informative job of convincing us that you deserve a raise.

Maybe you should try figuring that out before you take it to your boss.

Convince your boss why you are worth more money and the rest will be easy.

Keep in mind that the boss may ask you how much you think you're worth, so you better think of how much you think is reasonable before you go in there.

My dad always tells me "The sqweaky wheel gets the grease." If you don't say anything, you won't get anything. Don't sit around and expect it to come to you.

the first thing is to put yourself in a good light with the managers... show them that you work hard and that you're valuable...

send out some resumes, see what other people thing you're worth... then go to the boss and say that these people think i'm worth this much more...

if you don't get the raise you want, make sure you walk and take one of the other offers...

just my .02
