Look at those beauties!

I planted this tree (brown turkey) from a nursery online 4 or 5 years ago. I've been having problems keeping it alive during the winter here and since fruit only grows on woody stem of previous year's growth I never had anything to harvest until last year when a few (maybe 3) figs grew as a late season harvest (harvested in sept).

Now this year I did a really good jbo insulating the tree from the winter plus with the unseasonably warm weather I'm getting an early season crop this year - and lots of them! I believe these can be harvested in late june or early july.

anyone else mess with fig trees?

once you taste fresh ripe figs you might understand why i go through all the trouble trying to grow them myself outside of their normal climate zone!

I have a fairly large brown turkey fig tree that must be around 10 years old. It usually produces quite abit of figs. We also have a Celeste fig tree which is about the same age and is in horrible condition. It was moved before we bought the property and apparently that messed it up. I am about to dig it up and plant a new one. Hope you end up with enough to can for the the rest of the year. We ahve been sitting on our last few jars because last years crop wasnt the best.

By the way, I have never had a brown turkey fig until we bought our current house. Celeste figs are the more common figs around here. I find the brown turkey pretty good once canned. Fresh, they just are not as sweet as the celeste.

Don't leave anything under the tree... Figs fall and rot and become a sticky pile of evil in the blink of an eye.

What zone are you in?

I like the sounds of the celestial figs, especially how sweet they are. Also I see they have very similar zone preference as brown turkey, so I am confident if i can maintain a brown turkey then I can also maintain a celstial. Now I'm considering ordering a celestial for a second tree

Do the celstials have two crops per year like many other figs?

be sure to cover the tree with a net or those figs will all vanish.

Seriously? I didn't really consider that actually. That would suck if just before they got ripe some birds decided to enjoy my crop.

Oh don't worry - whatever this tree produces is going to be constantly monitored by me until I can eat it! Nothing is going to be left to drop on the floor!

Most of the Celeste trees around here are only once a year i think, my brown turkey has a second very small crop. ot sure my zone, but I am in Louisiana.

Oh and if birds are an issue. try and find LSU Gold Fig tress. The fruit matures while still staying a gold color, so the birds dont think they are ripe.

Cool, thanks!

Interesting that you and the pdf spell it 'celeste' and from this place they say 'celstial'. are they one in the same? http://www.willisorchards.com/product/Celestial+Fig+Tree?category=248

I am not sure if birds will be a problem. last year was my frist ever fruit but there was only 3, and it was in sept so maybe the birds weren't active. or maybe because figs dont grow naturally in my area the birds dont know to eat the figs?

but to be safe I would have no problem putting a net. I wonder though can I just wait until the figs start changing color before putting the net so I dont have to keep a net on the tree practically all the time?

I have a couple of fig trees on my property but I've never eaten any of the figs. I eat my apples and pears though.

that is exactly what happened to a good friends figs right before the were ripe enough to pick. don't forget that is the purpose of tasty fruits with seeds :)

I see you are in NY, I was in NJ when my dad had a fig tree in the yard. I'm not sure what species of fig tree it was, but he smuggled it from Italy on an airplane and planted it here. The tree always produced some of the best figs we ever ate but needed to be covered up each winter with insulation to weather the cold temps. How does your fig tree survive the winter?

I've never been able to stand the taste or texture of figs...or dates.

Now just grow a Newton tree and we're in business!

Got to watch the falling fruit on those.

We have a white fig tree in a pot. As soon as we finish pulling a stump, the tree will go in the ground.

fig tree juice(SAP) is poisonous and figs should only be harvested in fig season. when they break up. you have been warned.

I'm planning on putting in a couple fig trees this year too. Mission figs sound good to me. I don't care for the brown turkey figs unless they're really ripe.

nom nom nom, looks nice.

I have a couple montmorency cherry trees here from an online nursery, however, I only planted them about 2 winters ago, and they are growing slow.

I ended up looking up figs and wandered into figging. All I have to say is I'll never look at ginger the same way
