So after a couple of years with my Remmy 700 BDL custom .270 Redfeild 4X scope I'm gonna change.
I'm small 5'6" 160 lb and I find it big for my taste, I don't mind the recoil but it doesn't "fit" right .
So I'm gonna switch to Model 7 or something equivalent and 'might have settled on 7mm 08 with a 2X7 scope.
Living on the prairies/forest fringe I sometimes find myself in both terrains in the same day and I'd like the lighter gun as pretty much do a lot of walking.
No posting up in tree stands all day, here in Canada when its 0 F out you don't sit, I pretty much hunt Whitetails and Mulies and I think with the 165 grain .284 s It would be good for Moose/Elk 200 yards and under.
So how popular is the 7mm in the light firearms ? I know its a newer cartridge but it seems to get a lot of respect from all the writers I've read
Any other considerations?

You could just get a better fitting stock if you like the rifle you have.

I have a Marlin 60 :p
Which is awesome for keeping 'tuned' all summer but a little small for deer.
The .50 is a little big for deer
Ah finally something worth responding too. I did consider the .308 , as a short action cartridge hard to beat but since the model 7 has a 20" barrell the recoil would
go quite a bit higher than I'm used to . .
I did consider a new stock but mine doesn't have the floor plate so you have to work the action to get the bullets out , which is a pain and I'm not too sure bout the 'kit' to give it a floor plate.

Where? Like you, Saskatchewan, about an hour from where the world record Hanson buck was taken, Near Stoon
About half of the B&C bucks are taken here for all of Cananda and about 1/3 of the B&C black bears.
A Million square miles, a million people and wheat feild after barley feild after oat feild and so on makes for lots of big deer :)

I had a feeling you were from here somehow.

I havent really done any shooting in who knows how long. Maybe I'll get back into it sometime.

Do you reload? If so, I'd highly recommend loading up some 130 grain Barnes X bullets. You'll get the speed along with performance beyond what the bullet weight would indicate. IMO, the 7-08 just doesn't have the case capacity to push the heavier >150gr bullets to acceptable velocity. Another option would be one of the new Winchester or Remington 7mm Short Magnums.

I think there are too many virtual gun enthusiasts here, and not enough real gun enthusiests. :)

Are you varment hunting, target shooting, or backyard fun shooting?

I love my Browning A-Bolt, black synthetic stock, stainless, Simmons 4-12x scope....

It is extremely accurate, and I can have just over a 1 inch grouping, with 10 shots from 100 yards.

My fun guns are the Colt AR-15 A2 Pre-Ban, collapsable stock, and Ruger Mini-14 Stainless folder (pre-ban). They are fun to shoot in the back yard.

Here is the AR-15: Here you go.

Or perhaps a AWP? :p
AWM/P. Arctic Warfare Magnum/Police. n00b.

Edro: He said he goes deer hunting. On a side note, is that AR-15 semiautomatic?

you don't want an AWM, the bullet is so big it will tear the deer apart so there's nothing left to eat....or mount for that matter.
i like the good ol .308 Winchester

Yeah, it's Semi-Auto. I have a Hell-Fire trigger on her though :)

Yeah, for deer hunting, check our Browning's Bolt action rifles. Then again, damn near any high name rifle will do the job for ya.

My, look at all the night Owls ;)
I like the Browning A-bolt micro, again I want a light rifle as I hump it over miles and find myself in either dense bush or open feilds
Magnums lose all their advantage when you go to a short barrell and yeah it doesn't look like a lot of enthusiasts in ATOT :)
The Steyr Scout might be about right I didn't have that brand in my catalogue Ouch just looked nice rifle but $$$ I think I'll stick to North American manufacture!
I don't reload but I have a buddy who does it for me .. .

So where is a good firearms forums page of AT quality? I looked around a bit and didn't find any one with a lot of traffic and the one I did that had a lot of threads was so poorly organized it was just a big dumping of everything into one spot, hard to find anything without searching searching. .

If you want light, stick with the Rem but go for a titanium, kinda pricey(900ish), but if not try a Ruger Mdl k77RFLP, little cheaper but not quite as light (600). I doubt you will get too much gun help here, unless you want to be told aobut how effective a Glock is in Counter Strike. I have a bunch of links if you want to PM me for gun type message boards. BTW the magazing is NOT a shooting rest on an AR-15, bad shooting style, and how far out were you shooting that you need a scope on that mouse gun? 300 yards, lol.
