Congrats.

I like the washboarding on the lower half. It will help keep the damage to a minimum.

Things I would recommend:

-A comfy chair or setee (whatever they call those ass-cusions) - You will need this for times when Jr will not get to sleep.
-Shelves shelves and more shelves. - You will need them. A double bar for hanging clothes will also help in the closet.
-Storage space for things like strollers. You will need two.
-A main diaper bag that will not make you (are you the guy?) look froofy. You will be carrying it a LOT.
-Several smaller "emergency packs" for places like the car, your parents house (or other relative) or any other place you might be caught out w/o a diaper handy.

Just be careful not to buy too far ahead of the curve. It is not for the safety of the kid, just that a 1 year old will rip a pop up book to shreds if left with it, and would rather bang or throw any "learning" toy than actually use it.

Hope this helps!

(Father of 23 month old...)

So you do the DNA test already or just going to wing it and wait till their hair color grows out?

I have most of those things covered already.

As far as the closet goes, I built a custom organizer with 2 hanging rods and several shelves;

I have the "manly" bag covered as I got an army green Diaper Dude as a gift at the wife's shower. http://www.diaperdude.com/store/green-dude-eco-friendly-pr-16265.html

For the chair we got a large comfy glider/rocker with gliding ottoman. I can see my self nodding off in it already!

Good luck OP. And Congrats. Parenthood is, by far, one of the most rewarding experiences in life. I have a two year old and I still remember very clearly the day he was born. It is an incredible moment. Cherish all of it, because they really do grow up quick.

And take it from me. No matter what your wife is craving, do not let her eat mashed potatoes and cheesecake if she feels like she "has an upset stomach." When my wife was due, she suddenly started jonesing for some cheesecake factory cheesecake and potatoes, and your's truly made the mistake of running out to get them for her. She ate an entire piece of cheesecake and about half the potatoes, and then promptly went into labor. To make a long story short, that cheesecake and potatoes ended up all over me during the delivery. We laugh about it now, but it truly was revolting at the time.

Thanks for the warning, my wife is lactose intolerant so that would present a whole other set of problems!

Yea I agree with Soxfan about growing up fast.

The first year will be hell. Waking up every 2-4hours for feeding and diapers.
But then the 2nd year is crazy. Yea you sleep now, most time, but the little ah heck knows stuff and is walking, talking, etc...

My son, 22months, can see me do something once and he knows how to do it. He can take stuff apart and put it back together. He knows how to turn the tv on, open doors, tried to start my truck (does not know Chevy key will not start Ford), put clothes in hamper, put trash/diapers in trash can, eat with spoon/fork, drink from cup, open drawers, talk on the phone, etc...

Funny thing is my MiL had to unplug the TV from the wall as she said he had too much and he just get up and go flip it right back on. Worse was he woke up in the middle of the night, grabbed his pillow, and went to the living room and turned the TV on started to watch.

So get as much sleep as you can and don't under estimate how smart kids are.

Oh and get a membership to costco for diapers. Pays for itself. :)

Try not to cater to the kid though.

He will take EVERYTHING you give him/her and want more.

For some reason, at 2, our kid still does not watch any TV to speak of. His cousin is a Ni Hau Ki Lan addict (she would have to sit in front of a laptop for hours watching it... AND THEY LET HER!), and the cousin on the OTHER side was a SpongeBob addict at 3....

YMMV.

Oh, as for the closet, for the first few months, you could probably fit in 3 rails, as their clothing is so tiny!

Yeah, it's crazy how some kids get addicted to tv. My son loves to turn our tv (the "wee wee") on and off with the remote (the "mimote"), but he isn't really into watching it for any length of time. When he does want to watch, all he wants to see is choo choo's (thomas) or football. It's kind of nice, actually. Now I get to watch more college games cause my wife will give in to the kid.

You have trained him well!

If I can just get him to like Anime, Mythbusters and Cash Cab I think I will be set! ;)
