..who is your daddy and what does he do?

I hope that was a creative title to grab your attention... It's regarding my car.

1. 'check engine' light came on this morning when I started my car and it's still on commuting back from work. I RTFM and it says:
*The fuel tank level is being very low or approaching empty. (I don't think so, it's about half full)
*The engine's electrical system has a problem (I assume this means the light is on by mistake?)
*The emission control has a problem.
*The fuel filler cap is missing or not tightened securely.

What coud it be? FYI, the car is brand new, 50 days old 2003 Mazda 6. I want to try to solve this myself before driving another 20 mi. to the dealer. Also, is it safe to drive 50+ miles with the light on? I have to go out tonight...

2. I got a speeding ticket. Do I have to pay it without any choice or can I appeal it or something? How do I do that? As you can see, this is my first ticket I've ever gotten in my life...

Thank You.

1) Tighten your fuel cap, call the dealer, and take the thing in for a checkup.
2) If you were actually speeding, plead guilty and ask for traffic school since it's your first offence. Promise to be a good boy and they might adjust it to a small fine + 0 demerits.
3) Put YACT in the title, no0b.

Check engine light in a car newer than 1999 is 95% of the time an emissions control. It should be fine to drive. Take it to the dealer, and get it checked under warranty.

what's the logics behind it? I'm just personally irrated because the car is faulty already @ 50 days old.. (even if it's minor)

You're fine to drive it. Many autozones will do a free engine light check for you. Go up to desk and ask them if they can pull the codes. I would expect given your situation you should just bring it to the dealer with a stupid look on your face and say "Fix it, bitch."

i thought OBD II was all emissions?

make sure your gascap is tightened down all the way, if it isn't that light will come on.

Request defensive driving, take the course, pay court costs and you're done.

Are other people with your car having these issues? My maxima for instance often (for other people and once for me) has a faulty O2 sensor. Also as mentioned below sometimes you have to twist the gas cap several clicks to make sure it's not that :)

Tighten the gas cap and drive around for a while. If it doesn't go off after a day or so, take it to the dealer.
It's probably some loose "emission hose" or possibly a bad o2 sensor but not likely since it's a new car.

And you could drive around for a year with the light on if it is just emissions (which it is).

It's only 50 days old. I'd make the dealer fix it.

You suck.

I thought this thread might be interesting, now I'm just gonna nef in it.

If you'd put YACT I wouldn't have even looked in here. I'm going to sue you for wasting some of my time.
