I took my buddy out to lunch the other day (2 days ago) at a mexican restaurant. It's not the nicest place, but the food was great! Well, the ordering process was the same as McDonalds. Walk up to the counter, they have the big wall of stuff to choose from, then go sit down. When our order was ready the girl at the counter yelled "your order is ready" NOTHING SPECIAL. I wasnt expecting anymore. We were the ONLY people in the place

Our bill was $6.75x2 + $.15x2(water) + 6%sales = $14.62

I payed with my check card, and now I went to check my balance today it says $21.15 (pending)!!!! Now please understand, I have no problem tipping people, but $6 for a $15 meal for doing nothing more than what mcdonalds does AND charging me $.30 for 2 waters?! Im pissed.

What can I do?! I don't have the receipt anymore (probably... I'm gonna check in my garbage)

edit: and what I mean by "not the nicest place" is that it's ghetto, but good food. You guys know the type

Wait. 99.99% of the time, the real bill will show up in a few days.

Restaurants, gas station (when you pay at the pump), and some services that usually have tips will initially charge more for their service to make certain if you add a reasonably large tip, you don't go over your limit. Then when they have time (often a few days later), they go back and enter in the real charge with the real tip.

Note: this is the same reason gift cards suck - you often can't use your last charge at a restaurant, gas station, or service center.

I dont think it should be legal for companies to automatically add a tip to the bill. A tip is a gratitude, not a fee.

stop charge by calling your CC company. They'll probby just remove the charge and the restaurant will be screwed out of the money. You probby won't hear anything about it after that..

Did you read the receipt carefully? If you signed for 21.15 then you're out of luck. If the bill you signed only said 14.62 then you can contest the charge, and the restaurant has to show a receipt where you signed off on 21.15 or you get the money back.

the pending amount is not always what gets charged

its unlikely to be a tip, if anything it was user/data entry error

if you have your receipt you should be square

Agreed, but I'm with the verification theory. For example, if you pump gas on a credit card, you'll first get charged a dollar to verify the availability of funds, and then the dollar will go away when the bill actually goes through.

If it doesn't come out in the wash, go back to them and raise hell, but I'd advice waiting a bit.

It's no big deal. Restaurants authorize your card for 15-20% more than the total just in case you leave a tip. The real charge should show up in a couple days.

If it actually goes through that way then you have a problem.

Usually for me the Pending charge for restaurants are exactly what the real bill will be. I've had this happen to me before where I go get a meal here or there at a small place and spend maybe $10-$20 and then see my bill for was $5-$10 more when I check my statement.

Since then, whenever I use my ATM or Credit at restaurants, when they print out the receipt to sign, there is usually a space for tip and a space for total amount. I always draw a line through the tip portion or write a "0" and make sure the total is written in to = subtotal. That way they can't fill in the blanks after you leave and screw you over.. BASTARDS.

dude its still pending.

stuff like this always happens when I go out to bars on weekends. While that little * is next to the price being charged, that means it hasnt gone through. I guarantee you that once the * is gone and it has gone through, the total will be correct.

hell i've had a place charge me DOUBLE because they put holds on the card. After 3 days it was fine, but for the 3 days between when it went through, I couldn't use the $98 that I needed. I was pretty pissed about it.

geesh stop freaking out.....smaller resturaunts, gas stations, over charge initially for the purchase so that they guaruntee that they get their money....and the overcharge amount usually vaires.....and then after everything is processed, the right amount is shown....if you doubt this, contact your bank.

at this restaurant anyway... kind of funny because we are sitting on one of the largest aquifers in the country

They charged you for the cup, I've seen McDonalds do this if you don't order anything else. Of course when my wife was pregnant they would waive it (not good pub to piss of pregnant women who aren't even close to being "hormonal stable", that poor 15 yr old at Auntie Annes never saw what was coming!)

And thats why I'm particularly anal about keeping all any receipts that are hand written and later "typed" into the system, saw one this month that was 10 cents too much, easy to mistake a 5 for a 6. After you get the CC bill then you can shred 'em.
