I'm going to shoot whoever made iMovie

It's a great program, but they took away the freaking save feature? Are they insane?

You have rely on autosave, and then navigate into your user account and find a project and hope it saved properly.

Which I did. And then I moved it to another hard drive, where I tested it. And it worked. So then my computer died and I used my double checked backup file, and it is useless on a different computer. So as far as I can tell it is virtually impossible to save a file! WTF. There goes 3 days of work!

What I do not get is that the is that if I open it the package file there is a "still image" slide show with all my pictures from the project. And there are lots of other supporting files. And yet all that opens is a blank template. WTF!

If anyone is familiar with iMovie and has any ideas I would appreciate any input. I have a feeling I am screwed, though.

What is really great is that my Hackintosh Time Machine backup is completely useless. Except as a toy to tinker around a Hackintosh is a horrible idea for a main computer. I can put up with some instability, but it's insane. I am parting it out later this week and getting a Mini! I would really think twice if you are thinking of getting a Hackintosh and planning on using it as your primary computer. Very bad idea.

Well, unless you've changed something. There are two separate directories that iMovie '08 and above uses. You have iMovie Projects (which is the project data) and iMovie Events (which houses the actual movie files which the Projects pull from).

So if you can make sure that you've got BOTH of those directories in your Movies directory, or wherever you've got your stuff setup.

I've heard of a lot of issues with Time Machine backups, especially when moving to a new computer. Not sure if they are any fixes, but might be something to look into (a time machine issue, not an iMovie issue).

I think you should visit a "Dollar Store" and see for yourself. Is anything worth $1 made of quality?

iMovie is historically bundled with the OS. Its worth is $0, it's free. What do you expect from something that has no worth?

So by that "brilliant" deduction, the OS itself is worth "nothing". So dumb...

iMovie is a great piece of software for what it is. It's a consumer grade video editor, and it has worked just fine with everything I have used it for. Granted it's been simple splices and such, but I've never had any issues with saves, or anything else.

I do believe what we're seeing here is a Time Machine issue. It didn't fully backup the OP's stuff. Or the OP didn't grab both the directories when he moved the data.

Wow, this gets my nomination for most ignorant post of the year. And that's saying something...

Yeah, unless you really keep on top of it, a Hackintosh doesn't make a very good primary rig. You kind of have to ask yourself if you want to run it as a tool or as a hobby - the tool version being the one where you get it setup & working (with any bugs that you decide you can live with) and don't update it, or the hobby being where you invest a lot of time and energy into keeping it rolling. I enjoy tinkering with mine, so I put up with it, but it has more than it's fair share of annoyances

Yeah I'm also kind of annoyed at iMovie's saving scheme. I always go up to do a "Save" and I'm like d'oh! 😛

Could there be files anywhere else? For some reason there are five iMovie Projects and just one iMovie Event.

I like tinkering too, but unfortunately I just don't have the time for it anymore. Getting old sucks!

I think a Mac Mini would be cool now. The biggest drawback for me was the lack of a good hard drive, but now with SSDs I do not mind having a 2.5" drive in there. I will just have to add an external USB drive for media and downloads.

The one thing I am wondering is if I could still use super-duper as a backup. Can I back up to a USB drive and then swap that with the main drive if that one goes down?

You can actually run two displays on the mac mini per current generation, and if you're not an insane power user (tons of VMs, etc) - I would def. just get a Mini.

Yeah, I've contemplated many times just getting a real Mac (those 27" iMacs are sure tempting!), but then I see the pricetag and decide otherwise

Yup, you can boot from a USB or Firewire drive on the new Mac Minis. If you got a Firewire 800 enclosure with a 7200rpm drive, you'd probably get a nice speed boost over the internal 5400rpm drive, and then you wouldn't have to crack it open the Mini to put an expensive SSD inside (plus you could get a 1TB or 2TB drive for much cheaper). The MiniStack v3 case from NewerTech even matches the Mini and fits riht underneath:

Yeah but for the price of that thing I could buy a SSD! I want one anyway for the killer boot times. I plan to move the computer around a lot so boot time is essential.

And now regarding iMovie -- I've since started over on my project and guess what? There is absolutely no event folder in my Movie directory - just the iMovie Projects folder. No wonder I did not think to back it up - it was not there!

Is it somewhere else? I would really like to back this up but I have no idea how!

Are you doing a lot of editing work? Might be worth it to invest in Final Cut Express if you are. That's what I use.
