But before you get all excited, keep in mind that I'm 15 years old and this most certainly not a "career move." I work at Meijer Grocery Stores, which most of you guys I'm sure don't have, they're only in the midwest.
Anyway, I've only worked there for a few months, but with school events, piano competitions/recitals and the rest of life becoming overwhelming alone, the last thing I should be doing is working, when I've already paid off the debts that I started working to pay off in the first place. (whew! run-on sentence, sorry). Here's the thing, I NEVER HAVE A DAY OFF anymore. Why? Cause I go to school 5 days a week for 8 hours, then go to work on the weekends, both saturday and sunday, for 8 hours. So, all 7 days of the week, every week, I'm doing some kind of work that I don't like to do (working there sucks for various reasons), and I never ever get a day to myself. Anyway, I figure with all the days I've been requesting off lately (like I said, I'm busy with the rest of my life, especially music), they'd probably get pissed and fire me soon anyway.
So, sometime during this week, I'll go in, pick up last weeks paycheck, and go have a little chat with one of my 20-something bosses (and that is not an exaggeration) and give them my two weeks notice. Hope they don't go ape-sh!t over it, I doubt they will, 600 people work there. But oh well.
The reasons working at Meijer sucks: The discipline is horrific. They say teenage jobs are a great place to meet new friends yada yada yada. Not here. If you get caught talking while you're on the clock, they "write you up" and basically every time you get written up they take you back to a room at some set time and yell at you. With each time you get written up, the punishment gets more and more severe until they eventually just fire you. They take themselves to seriously-it's a friggin grocery store and if your smile isn't big enough they'll rip you a new one. Edit:Thought I might add this to show you what I mean, things i have been written up for: (1)Being 2 minutes late to a meeting.(I got there at 5:32, instead of 5:30.) (2)Calling in sick (they punish you for calling in sick? wtf?) (3)One of the "mystery shop people" (someone who meijer hires to dress in street clothes and come shop around the store and then review us) said my "smile and 'hello' didn't seem legitimate." End Edit.
I also don't like the other people there, most of the work I do is near the front of the store, but if I go in the back where they're stocking stuff or whatever, the people who work back there are complete assholes. A few days ago this was the conversation I had with a guy who looked about 19 who worked in the back, a bunch of the people who work in front were coming back in that area for a meeting, and lots of people were trickling in. He looked at me:
Him:"Hey, what's going on?" I thought he meant like "what's happening, whats up" that kinda thing so..
Me:"Hey."
Him:"No, not hello, what the f!ck is going on?"
And that pretty much sums up a lot of the "friendly conversations" with fellow employees there.
OK, I'm done ranting now. You could all care less, just thought I'd enlighten all of you on a little chunk of my life there.
