I'm going to Europe. Should I bring my laptop?

I am a consultant, and as a result I can work pretty much anywhere; yes, including Europe. I plan on traveling for about 2-3 weeks, and then I was wanting to spend another week in London. The only way I could feasibly do this is if I actually worked that week, but I'm concerned about dragging my laptop across Europe. I've heard crime against tourists is somewhat high in certain areas, and the loss of my laptop would be a seriously unfortunate situation.

Can anyone with more European experience than I please offer their thoughts? The idea of running around London for a week working out of a coffee shop sounds romantic indeed, but not if I run a high risk of losing my life support.

Thanks!

I found London to be a very safe city. Even when dropped off in the center of the city with a 1.5 mile walk to my bro's apartment at 3:00am, I felt safe.

Short of being mugged, so long as you aren't dumb about I don't think it would be an issue.

Just be smart and don't leave it laying on the ground or on a table when you aren't around. Always keep a hand on it or keep it strapped to your back in a backpack or slung over your shoulder. Just minimize the risk.

When you stay in a hotel, try and pick one that has a decent sized safe within the room and lock it up in that if you don't take it with you.

no, never.

First off europe, as any other 3rd world continent, has very scant power infrastructure, so chances are you wont be able to use your laptop. Plus even if you do, it will most likely terrify the natives.

Second it's generally recommeded that you wear or carry no items that would make you look wealthy. So no laptops, jewelry, brand name clothes or shoes made in far asia. It's recommended that you wear sweat pants and an old workout/jogging jacket just to be safe.

Also make sure that you receive propershots, europe is ridden with malaria and syphilis

... you americans always crack me up with stuff like this. My mom actually knows/knew an american lady that came over couple years ago with nothign but sweat pants and thrift shop clothes. Apparently she heard that "advice" on some morning show so her entire wwardrobe was composed of salvation army crap. Of course she looked like an idiot when she showed up at work in sweatpants (this was ford subsidiary located in the czech republic)

Thanks a lot all. I forgot to mention that my largest fear was leaving it in the hotel, but vi_edit addressed my concern. I'll be staying near Hyde Park, so I hope there's somewhere near that has wifi :)

Thanks again.

Wtf is your problem? I asked a reasonable question. I'd ask the same damn question if I were going to Vegas. The question is as to whether or not my being an obvious tourist puts me in a position of liability, and that liability extends to something in my possession of considerable value; and no, I don't refer to the value of the laptop itself, but to the content on the laptop.

No need to be an arse. I'm not some Americancentrist who feels only heathens live beyond our borders, but it would be irresponsible of me to wantonly roam about a foreign country without consideration for the safety of my livelihood.

how exactly would you be an obvious tourist? You're basically proving my point....
You'd be lot worse off walking around in detroit after dark than walking around trafalgar with a laptop in your hand. Wether you're an american "tourist" or a london native, your chance at getting robbed or what not are identical...

Apparently reading comprehension is not your forte. He knows about Detroit or South central LA. He does NOT know about Europe/England, hence the reason he's asking us. Now can you follow that or do we have to draw a picture for you?

And you are very wrong about it being identical.

Wow, what a completely asshole response to a completely legitimate question.

Yes, but I believe that he is from Europe...hence his 'you Americans' comment...he apparently does not identify himself as an American.
