I'm going to cry.

Ok, I have wrestled with Vista until I've configured it all right, but the one thorn in my side is Vista's update.

It downloads the updates and then will not install them. It randomly says it can't check for updates but when I click on it, it says it has 11 updates waiting.
I have encountered error codes (0x080004005) updating windows defender that have no solution. When I try to change or re-register wauaeng.dll, it gives me an access denied error code.
I can't reinstall the service because when I run the update installer it encounters an "unrecoverable error." Does anyone know how to uninstall and reinstall it?

I recently thought I found a breakthrough when I also enabled the backup service and it started installing, but the problem persists.

Got any ideas? I am sick of this. I've looked at countless sites and I don't need this when I'm already BSODing while overclocking.

Updates are a REAL pain on some flavors of Linux. The patch delivery systems are usually screwed up because they have to replicate the database of patches across so many servers to handle the load of so many systems checking them every day.

I'm not surprised if Microsoft deals with the same kinds of problems if you get stuck connecting to a 'bad' server from time to time. Are you on SP1 yet? You might gain some stability by upgrading and can download and install the Service Pack from an EXE file rather than having to use Windows Update.

If you're on SP1, maybe wait a few weeks and see if it's a problem on Microsoft's side. They may iron out whatever kinks they've got. My system seems to be updating fine for now, but I expect it to break any day. :p

Already used SP1. I have been encountering this problem since day one. My last defender update is from february.

I also use linux. The difference is that I can compile my own applications. Also, I've never had my netpkg "upgrade" (like apt-get update) die on me.

Hrm...

Well, it's an outside shot, but if you haven't tried it...

I have a LOT better luck uninstalling programs using CCleaner than the Vista uninstaller!

You might give 'Crap Cleaner' a try... ;)

CCleaner -> Tools -> Uninstall

I'd fix this first. Memory corruption can cause Registry and other file corruption that can make a mess out of Windows.

I fixed it. One last BSOD today and nothing since. I have reverted back to my stable OC. But I don't think my memory would be a problem, just CPU, seeing as I was always running memory below spec.

The problem was since I got this computer though.

I have the same issue with Windows XP except it says Windows could not install the updates. I have to manually install them to get Windows Update to shut up. I've deleted the log, deleted where the updates download and I still have no luck.
