i went to the dermatologist yesterday and the antibiotics and topical stuff just isnt working 🙁 i was on accutane from october of last year to april this year... it worked really well, but now its coming back :*( and now im on depo, which he says makes it worse, so i have to stop taking that... 🙁 i wanted to be back on accutane, so i dont know why im complaining really, im just scared because it did make me pretty depressed (unless it was just the 'placebo effect') and was VERY harsh on my skin. for those of you who have been on accutane, what helped with the dryness? i got lip stuff from my doctor, took the vitamin e of course.. i even put vitamin e oil on my face and used this really really thick cream on my arms, but my skin and lips were still very very dry :-/ so um... any suggestions for this time?

argh I hated the time I was on accutane. I did just about everything wrong though...so I'd be the wrong person to turn to for advice on what to do to reduce side effects.

long time ago but that stuff really worked. With low humidity outside, usually in the winter, my arms molted tho. 😱

It was cold so I wore long sleeves and dealt with it.

Maybe the guy who was looking at you the other day was staring at your acne?

Oh yeah... it's been said that urine can help fight acne 😀

first of all, you guys are assholes. im sure you have perfect skin? you have no idea what having bad acne does to your self esteem. being on a medicine that makes every other part of you feel like sh!t, plus makes your skin way worse for the time being, just so that you can feel comfortable without makeup (in my case) or wearing clothes that show your back or chest (also in my case). anyway, no he was not staring at my zits. my face is, for the most part, pretty clear. there are a few zits but theyre tiny. my back and chest however are getting bad again. thats sexy huh?

I was on accutane when it was first used about 7 years ago. It worked wonders for me. It did make my skin sensitive and acne worse for a bit, but then everything got MUCH better.

As soon I was off of it, I was watching the news talking about the depression thing. It was ENTIRELY true. I am already pre-disposed to that mindset, and I got to tell you, things got pretty dark in my life during that time. Then *poof*, all better when I was off of it for a few weeks.

Wonders for my ACNE, but almost ruined my life.

i used complex 15 face moisturizer(water based i think) and medex(i think that's what it's called, comes in the little blue cylindrical container) lip balm to help my face and lips while i was on accutane.

fortunately, i haven't had to go back on it since(1993) but i have been using otc preventative measures like daily cleansers with benzoyl peroxide in them.

good luck.

thank you for your help. ill have to try those.. im not sure how much lotion will help though when OIL didnt even get rid of the dryness. :-/ im afraid ill have to go on it again ... that would suck. but my cousin was on it three times and still has to take minocycline (the antibiotics)... this time i convinced him to let me take the half-dose for a year instead of full-dose for 6 months.. so hopefully the side effects wont be as bad and maybe it will last longer since the accutane will be in my system for longer? i hope so...

I had a modest problem going through high school, but I just refused to go on Accutane or anything like it; I didn't want to deal with all the side-effects. I did use Retin-A for about two days, and I skipped school the second day because my face was so read and burning like hell.

I know what skin problems does for your self esteem, but I also know that it's always worse to you than to others; however, I'm certain it's more difficult for females. An older female friend of mine went on Accutane when she was about 30, and I honestly didn't notice she had a problem beforehand; however, she COMPLETELY changed while she was on it. I thought she was the devil incarnate for a while, but her moods were normal again after she stopped use of Accutane.

Good luck with whatever method you choose.

[edit]Just realized I didn't offer any help either since I didn't take Accutane, sorry 🙂[/edit]

In junior high I was on Accutane for about 3 months... it completely obliterated my acne. I have seriously had like 10 pimples since (I'm 29 now). It was pretty amazing and dramatic, the way Accuate worked. I was on all kinds of stuff before that, basically all the topical treatments you can think of, but nothing really worked until I started on the Accutane.

won't use the stuff, too much crap you gotta do, etc.. i just used dial soap all the time on my face, and my problems went away a few years ago.

yeah, its like a miracle worker. after i got off it earlier this year my skin was PERFECT. but then it came back :-/ ... my doctor thinks it may be partially due to the fact that im on depo though, as i mentioned before.. so bye bye depo :*(

Why not switch to ortho-tri-cyclen? It's supposed to help with acne.

It's no secret that Accutane works but it's very potent. I remember my lips were SO chapped the outer skin flaked off and my lips were bright red. People kept asking me if I was wearing lipstick -- the nerve of these people haha.

I posted this before but I'll post it again. My sister took accutane and she ended up with a bald spot on her head the size of a quarter. The hair grew back but I can see how that can be embarrassing to a teenager.

My advice: Go with Proactiv. It works .. TRUST ME. No side-effects. I used to suffer from acne but I think I out-grew the acne stage as I'm rarely ever breaking out. Proactiv got me through the hard times.

I used Vaseline lip stuff and Neutorgena mositurizer. Being on Accutane sucks, but it really works.
I never felt depressed or anything while I was on it... the monthly blood tests sucked though.
Don't they require continuous pregnancy tests for the ladies also?

believe it or not...my skin never dried out. Even accutane couldn't cure me...I am awesome!!!

Did leave me a bit night blind though. I have a lot of trouble driving at night now.

Doh, I completely forgot about Proactiv. I have to second that suggestion as it helped me a lot as well. It really is fantastic stuff, and it didn't have that typical "it gets worse before it gets better" problem that so many medications do.

My skin gets dry in the shoulder and arm areas too. Not severely, but dry enough. Thanks for the info. Does your health insurance cover dermatologist?

I actually thought this was another diet thread until I saw the word dermatologist.
