<edit> The title was previously "I'd hate to be a Jew," in case you are trying to piece it together and get something such as "I hate jews" from all the other tidbits in the posts below. Please take your time to attempt to understand what was posted and how it was meant before you flame me. </edit>

I'd hate to be Sephiroth_IX, as the "multi-purpose" reaming comes his way.........

It seems to me that the word "Jew" almost has negative connotations, given that that is the word used by anti-semites. I'm not sure how "Jews" feel about the subject though.

I have some Sephardic blood in me.

Nothing like a little Spanish Inquisition to change a family!

Spoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon

Interesting you should ask that. Seph asked me that same thing on ICQ a couple minutes before he posted this, and I said it didn't offend me. Personally I'm annoyed by people who try to act extremely politically correct by using terms like african-american and jewish person. Seph then proceeded to ask me Ok, that's just you...what about all those other Jewish peeps?

:D

Yea, the word "JEW" does seem to carry a negative connotation in our society. Jewish seems to be the politically correct version. It complicated because it describes a race and religion in one shot.

as koni said, seph, we don't want you anyways:) j/k of course as well:)

trp, no jew is supposed to eat ham or any pork, as it is seen as an unclean animal, so if reformed jews eat ham, they are going against the religion. (not that i haven't had a piece of bacon once or twice in my life though)

most jewish people are very good sports about these types of things, in all honesty, you won't find someone who enjoys a jew joke more than a jew, assuming they are not of an antisemetic variety, but actually humorous, since most of the time, they have a good deal of truth:) in reality though, most jewish people refer to themselves as jews, and i know that i for one do not take 'jew' as a negative connotation unless it is said with one as the meaning. i do have to admit that i did get a lil interested in this thread due to the title, but after reading the subject, i am not at all offended, but rather find it somewhat humorous.

Farbrio:

Interesting about the eating of pork. I have colleauges who are jewish and boy do they ever eat salami and hot dogs. They it that stuff much more than me and I am Catholic. They are somewhat religious I believe but not unlike others they bend the rules.

I'm getting hungry!!!!!!!!!!!

trp,
now, some hot dogs and salami are considered kosher - any all beef hot dog or salami would be considered loosely kosher. a meat isn't truly kosher unless it was butchered by a kosher butcher. now there aren't very many kosher butchers around, nor are they exactly cheap, so for this reason, most jews are not completely kosher, but instead follow the don't eat pork or mix milk and meat rules

I knew about kosher hot dogs but not salami. I doubt the stuff in our cafeteria is kosher but thats another matter. Interesting.

lol, yea, i seriously doubt that anything served in a cafeteria is kosher, let alone resembles real food:) and yes, kosher salami is available, actually at most supermarkets, hebrew national brand has some, as well as 'truly kosher' hot dogs

not pork and milk, but any meat and milk. it comes from the possibility that a calf could be cooked in its mother's milk, which was seen as something not to do in biblical times.

should i just do a quick run down on the kosher rules?:)
