I'm giving up on smart phones - I'm going old school (flip phone)

I've had 3 smart phones (a Palm, a Blackberry curve, and a blackberry storm). I am convinced, I no longer need a smart phone. I'm not that important yet in my career where I need access to my email 24/7, and I definitely don't need access to my personal email 24/7. I don't need access to facebook at all times of the day.

I want my extra $30/month for data back. This Sunday, I'm eligible for an upgrade at Verizon. And while all of my friends are getting new smart phones every year (lately they've been getting the Droid X), I'm going to "upgrade" to a regular ole flip phone. No data, nothing fancy....it does 1 job, make phone calls.

This is very exciting.

You mean phones do more that make calls? I gotta get out more.

Srsly. I've got an LG flip phone. I'm old. I'm not texting, checking email or going on the internet with my phone. If I want to talk to someone, I call. It has big numbers on the display so I can see them. It does have a camera. Maybe I can get some b00b pics my next trip to N.C.

i still rock the samsung gleam flip phone.

i have no need for a smartphone, i'm at a damn computer 8 hours a day during the work week and have a desktop and laptop at home. i have enough computers around me that the extra features are not going to help much. i don't need to spend that $30/mo on something I won't use much.

i actually am eligible for hte new every 2 thing at verizon right now, it would make the latest android phones $150. i've contemplated it but I just don't think I'll do it. I was thinking how great it would be for football season, but I'm around a computer most of the time anyways to check stats of any games.

i do development as well and have made an android app, but I had to just use the simulator as my only way to test it. i do kind of wish i could have seen how it looked on the actual phone heh.

Grats! What I want is a phone where I only need to pay for e-mail/IM as that's all I use my phone for. I take/make maybe 2 phone calls per month on average and I would have no problem lowering that to zero calls per month, unfortunately I have not seen any plans around here that would allow me to only pay for that, so I still get stuck with the ~$20+ per month for phone service. :(

I have never gone to the smart phone because I have never wanted to pay data fees. I am looking to upgrade my phone though.
Anyone have any suggestions? I've always had good luck with the LG VX.... phones

I'm just tired of being monthly billed into oblivion. If I could ever get my wife to give it up (I'd have a better chance of her giving up an appendage first) I'd love to toss the freaking cell phones and their $90 a bill in the trash.

That's just two phones with the 400 or something minute a month plan and $5 or $10 a phone for texting plans.

I already pay $50 a month for internet access. I don't need another $30 (or $60 for both phones) on top of that.

I use my "phone" as an actual phone so little that it makes more sense for me to get some more entertainment out of it and get a smartphone. Video playback, games, quick web browsing from anywhere, GPS, etc... all useful to me.

What carrier?

I think Verizon is moving to mandatory dataplans on all touch phones. I actually "downgraded" from a Dare to an ENV 3(?) flip non-touch screen. I actually do use the phone as a phone more than anything else and I couldn't stand the loss of the physical buttons. Trying to enter in access codes for dial in meetings and other options was beyond frustrating.

The ENV3 has a decent keypad and the camera is one of the better ones I've seen in a phone.

Or you could take your Verizon phone over to Page Plus and get 1200 minutes, 1200 texts and 50 mb of data for 29.95/ month. I just get smartphones with wi-fi and use the cellular data only if I am out and about.

Its not the best (barely any data) but for the price its great.

Forgot to mention, they won't activate Blackberries but Palms, Motorola and HTC's are fine. Admittedly it's lame since you will kill that amount of data real quick if you are doing Youtube, GPS, etc. But it's a good way to stick it to the man regardless!

Same here, sort of.

My last phone was an LG Dare and I didn't even use most of the features. I had a data plan at once time but again, rarely used it so got rid of the data plan. Then I got tired of it being on my hip and I couldn't keep it in my pocket because it kept activating stuff (touch screen). Oh yeah, and the touch screen was pretty quirky and I had a lot of trouble getting it to enter the right characters.

Hell, I don't even get cell signal at home, so I really only use it when I go somewhere, like to/from work, etc.

So when my new every 2 thing with verizon came up, I decided to get a flip phone. I got the Samsung Convoy.

You're insane.

You might as well say, "I don't need a phone at all".

Phones keep you connected to other phones.

Smartphones keep you connected to just about everything. You have access to the entire world's information (virtually), assuming you have signal.

I still use my razr from 4 years ago. People think I'm poor.

I'd like to go back to a RAZR. I went from a RAZR to a BlackBerry Pearl and this thing is a gigantic POS. I'd take the RAZR over the Pearl any day.

I too liked the LG VX phones but they now require a data plan. Having trouble finding anything I actually like that doesn't require a plan.

why do you need to be connected 24/7? What are you doing that's so important?

If I want to look up something, I'll use a PC. Not only is it faster, and easier, but I won't strain my eyes looking at a tiny ass screen.

I'm in front of a computer all day. I sit in front of a computer at work, and when I get home, I'm sitting in front of the computer for a few more hours. I'm always connected.

Yes, I like do things where I am not at a computer. It's a shocking concept for many I'm sure. :D

your problem is that you haven't tried a real smartphone yet...

oh, and don't use your upgrade on a shitty phone. go buy the newest smartphone out there, and then sell it on ebay for profit, then go buy your flip phone somewhere else without a contract
