I'm getting pretty tired of these multi-disc game setups...

I don't mind the multi-CD thing although I would prefer DVDs.

My big gripes:
1. Requiring the CD to be in to play. I've got dozens of games and I hate having to search for the disc. It's like we've never advanced from the floppy days or something. What's the point of having a hard drive if you still have to use the CD?

2. Paper sleeves. !@#$!$. I paid 50 bucks for some game and they give me 5 discs in paper sleeves, one of which has a CD-key sticker on the back of it. What complete BS. I have to make sure I don't loose the paper sleeve for the entire time I own the game. Man that infuriates me. If you want to charge me $53 instead of $50, fine. Just give me a fricken jewel case already...especially if you're going to require me to do #1 above.

That's what Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools is for. :D

However, because many people mount images of games that they don't own - security measures have been taken to prevent this in lieu of those who have legit copies.

The new Securom supposedly defeats the latest image mounting/virtual drive software ... but i'm sure that those companies have or will find a way around this.

I used Alcohol 120% and it's a wonderful program. I have imaged and mounted many kids games that require the cd to be in the drive (that I legitimately own) and it's such a time and stress-saver because my kids can just click on the game and it will run right away rather than asking for "Barney's Circus" to be put into the rom drive and so forth.

I've got at least 8-9 virtual drives. From kids games to Diablo 2 LoD.

It's ridiculous that games are still CD. How much is a DVD drive now, 30 bucks for a generic/rebagded? Come on. Games in Europe are almost all DVD, yet here it has to be a 'Special Edition,' and even then you're lucky if it's not CDs. The OEM PC manufacturers have been including them as default since 2000, so what's the problem?

I daresay, it really can't be due to the cost of the physical construction of the CDs vs DVDs either, considering how many DVDs are in the bargain bin at WalMart and selling for $10 or much less.

It is disappointing. Perhaps they do it as another form of copy-protection - if one wanted to illicitly copy the game, they would have to take the time and bother to burn multiple discs, rather than just a single (DVD) disc?
