I'm getting LAID OFF and this is my plan...

Well I won't have the final word on whether I'm laid off or not until April but it's pretty certain it is going to happen and here's my tentative plan.

Go ahead and critique or criticize.

I plan to take a couple of months off before kicking into full gear and look for another job. Know that I do have a fully funded 1 year emergency fund but I won't have to touch it since my unemployment income (~$1700/m) should cover my monthly expenses. Granted I do have to take some cuts.

First thing first is to sell my car & bike. Between the payment & insurance these vehicles cost me $763/month. That's a huge portion of income that I freed up.

With the ~$1700/m income and a $770/monthly (mortgage+utilities), I should have around $930 left. I don't have to worry about food since my girl live with me and she take care of that part in this household.

As for a vehicle to get around in, I'm thinking about getting a Honda Elite Scooter (Brand new for ~$3000 after tax + misc fees). They have a lot of cargo capacity, get 100mpg, and cost only $20 a month in insurance.

Since I don't have a job, I don't see the need to buy a car yet. But my plan is when I do get a job I will buy a cheap craigslist car. Until then this scooter will be my mode of transportation. It is capable of going 55mph, I just can't go on the highway or interstate with it. But do I really need to?

If push come to shove, I can use my girl's car in an event of emergency. She work for a family member so her schedule or taking a day off is pretty flexible.

I plan to take off and relaxes for the whole summer and then start looking for another job. With my bills being so low ($770/m), I'm pretty sure any job I get can get me by. That'll give me plenty of time and flexibility to search and do something I truly enjoy as a job.

Anyone care to give an opinion?

What do you have against the letter "s"?

Edit: I'd start looking right away, might take that year to find something.

While I like the fact that you have thought this far forward, it might be in your best interest to get your name out to temp agencies, contracting companies, etc, and start looking now. The BEST time to look for a job is when you already have one and since you know that your impending layoff has a good chance of happening, I would start looking now. This puts you in more of a position to pick and chose offers when you still have time to do so as opposed to taking the first offer you get because you need the cash in 12 months.

there are a lot of stories about people being unemployed having a harder time getting a job than people that are currently employed. I would start looking now... even as attractive as a few months to kick back sounds.

How about looking for a job now instead? It is easier to find a job when you have a job, for multiple reasons.

I'm not looking to stay unemployed that long, probably a couple of months (2-3) should suffice. Just some time to unwind and relaxes.

WTF are you going to do though? I think you'll be bored.

I could go down to Florida and relaxes for a couple of weeks, my family is down there. I've always wanted to move down to south florida so this may give me an opportunity to start looking employment wise while i'm down there.

:hmm:

The only bills I have are the ones I listed on the original post. No credit card balance, no medical bills, nothing.

Just my mortgage ($520) & average monthly utility bills of $250. :D

why do you keep saying relaxes...?

Because it's a high stressful job and you're dealing with scums every day. Enough to raise your blood pressure and shorten your lifespan. This profession have the shortest lifespan of all. The average is 5 years after retirement, 5 years after retiring and you die.

How old are you?

Why dont you have a paid for car? Even at 21 or 22 years old your car/truck should be paid for.

If part of your plans are to "sell something" - then you did not need it to start with.

Technically speaking, in order to be eligible for unemployment you must be ready, willing, and able to work as well as actively seeking gainful employment. I won't pretend that you would be the first person to violate those rules, however, if you're deciding in advance to "take a couple of months off" my opinion is that you should not be able to collect. (Neither should any of the others, but they didn't ask for opinions, you did.) I'd assume that if you got caught, you'd have to repay the funds, although like I said above I'm sure you're not the first person to do this.

While your chick pays for food now, are you sure she's going to stick around with someone not even trying to find a job?

And you are talking of vacationing out of state even?!? What's she supposed to do, suck it up?

I've had several paid for cars and several unpaid for cars. I go through a lot of cars, it's one of my vice.

Anyway, I don't "need" this current car but I do love driving it. The payment did not bother me one bit as I used to make a lot more money up until now.

Technically If you look back at all the pornography you've seen, one of them is bound to be an underage girl. You could technically be in prison right now for child pornography and permanently labelled as a child predator for the rest of your life. You won't be able to get a job outside of McDonald. Let's not get technical :D
