I'm getting incredibly sick of Halo 3 matching

I've been going down ranks from 18 to 14 now and still going down. Basically, my team ALWAYS loses (8 in a row so far), and I'm pulling my team by having more than twice the points of the 2nd person.
And when I look at the rankings of the teams, it's obvious that the other teams is always more experienced (judging by the max skill level, current skill level, and rank)

Anyone else been grouped up crappily all the time and getting your skill level down?

edit: now 11 rounds

I quit after my ranks kept dropping even though i didn't loose. CoD4 is a much better experience.

I'm waiting for prices to drop until I buy it 🙂
60 dollars is just... insane

Yes indeed. in this aspect, halo 3 is the biggest pile of shit. I can't believe they made it like this. it's just ABSOLUTELY ridiculous.

I experience the exact same problem.. my teams ALWAYS suck

I've rarely had any matches where I was rated much differently from my opponents... those times usually have people who are party'd up. Just dont play if you hate it that much.

I get pissed off when I play something like 10 matches and always get 2x more kills than deaths and I don't gain any rank. Then I play one match where I do bad and I lose a rank. I think the last time I played Halo 3 was thursday night gaming last week.

I've never been much of an online FPS player. So early on, I was having this same problem in Halo 3 until I realized that the K/D ratio is a much bigger factor in how much you're helping your team compared to total kills. I was so happy to be getting 18 kills a match that I was completely ignoring that I was dying 20 times. 😛 I then focused more on teamwork and less on suicide missions and my teams started winning.

Anyway, point being: Is there any chance you're not helping your team as much as you think you are?

What is your gamertag?

On a side note, the most issues I have with ranked games, comes when I have teammates that just drop, forcing a 4 on 3 match.

maybe you should stop caring about that little # next to your name and just play the damn game.

i wish ranks were hidden so people wouldn't worry about them.

The only reason I care about the number is so when I finally get enough exp to move up the officer ranks, I will... other than that, I play for fun, and fun is what everyone should play for...

well, fun and money...

Yep. Who gives a crap.

At least the ranking system in COD4 gives you a reason to rank up. You also never lose xp or rank.

I can't understand worrying about rank when there are no unlockables from doing it.

This keeps happening to me too. My team-based ranks refuse to budge, and then when I do well but my team loses I'll lose a rank.

Most recently I partied up with three other people and after losing our first match we pretty much dominated the next six. Even though I was the lowest ranked player on my team, I was consistently at the top of the scoreboards, and had a couple phenomenal games. I finally moved up two ranks after the fourth match, but that was it.

Before that I was again in a party and it seemed like everyone consistently went up in rank except for me, even though I usually finished ahead of them. Maybe it has something to do with the disparity between our ranks, although they usually aren't that different--only a few points at most. It's especially confusing since I'm usually the lowest rank - you would think it would bump me up to be in line with my teammates, especially if I am outplaying them.

yes at one point I lost 14 team slayer matches in a row. sucks.

What I don't get is I can be mvp my team still loses so I go down a rank. it is frustrating

Yea, this can be annoying, but that's why I don't play Team Slayer unless I have at least one friend on to help me out. Also CK is completely right, K/D spread is very important. Most of the time in team slayer there will be someone on the team that has a large negative spread that makes it very hard for the better players on the team to compensate.

I laugh at the people who take their rank sooooo seriously in R6:Vegas. I've played matches where people simply lost their mind because our hodgepodge team of random players got beat by some clan that was obviously practicing. Good lord, why can't they just play for the fun of it.....or have the sense to know they'll probably be spanked beforehand.

Yeah, in R6 there are quite a few people who have already hit elite who reset their ranks. I almost did it for the hell of it, but Cod4 and halo 3 were released. It's a lot of fun playing as privates and destroying the other team who are all elites.

I think one of the problems with the ranking system is that you are typically ranked against people that are supposedly equal to your skills. If you don't go above and beyond people of similar skill, and are simply staying competitive with them, then you don't have much opportunity to rank up. Now if you are a rank 20, and you happen into a match against a rank 30, go after that son of a bitch every time. I think your performance against higher ranked players determines your rank just as much as a simple K/D ratio at the end of the match.

I personally like the ranking system. I trust in it. If I don't move up, then I really need turn up the heat if I want more rank.

How can you trust that if you lose 2 consecutive games you can go down 2 levels but it can take upwards of 10 consecutive wins to recover those 2 levels. Seems shady.

That's a nice theory, but it doesn't appear to hold true.

Check out Carnage, Field Stats, and the difference between ranks. Notice I was a lowly 7. The only reason I could think to not allow me to rank up is because my highest achieved is 20, but in this instance even that shouldn't matter.

I eventually went up 2 points, but only after 3 more matches.

Eh, I don't know how it works, but I still think it "works". Of course, I don't really give a shit about my number anyway, so that could have something to do with it. 🙂

But looking at your overall stats, your K/D ratio is only 1.12. If they judged your rank by a single game, then the ranking system would definitely be broken more than everyone already thinks it is.

True. If you play long enough I suppose it "works", it's just that it seems counterintuitive at times. Especially since I've been doing well yet it has been fairly stagnant. Not that it matters, if I was really concerned with my rank I would just grind it out more in lone wolves, but since it's there I pay attention to it not moving.

EDIT: It's also weird because in contrast I was able to move from 15 to 20 in Lone Wolves in under 5 games (I think it was 4?). Gotta love Crazy King 🙂

You can't really judge based on one match. It's a continuum. Once you get closer to the threshold for the next rank, it doesn't take as much to go up or down. Sometimes when I'm borderline on a rank, I'll go up one match, down the next, up the next, and so on until I start doing consistently better. If I have 10 matches where I do well and get close to the threshold for the next rank, it'll take more than a few bad matches for me to go down.

I do think that they put too much emphasis on your team's performance. If I'm +5 but my team plays badly, I shouldn't go DOWN. I shouldn't go UP either, because team games do require teamwork.

BTW - it appears that your opponents in that game are French. That's like beating up a crippled kid. Of course you don't deserve to rank up! 😛
