Im getting free electricity!

Im living in college apartments, the previous 4 tenants of the apartment (4bedroom) obviousely had electricity, now we moved in, 4 new people (one of the old guys, not the one who had his name on electricity has his name on the lease) and we did a lease transfer.

Anyways, to make the story short, we're still getting electricity and I'm wondering since we didnt sign any agreement with the electricity company. Can they somehow screw us sometime later?

Probly but they can just own you better once they cut off your power and "forget" to turn it on for a month.

Does the lease say anything about electricity?

In some college apartments, electric/water/cable is actually included in the lease price.

As soon as the old tenants receive a bill and inform the electric company of the day they moved out, expect a nice bill to arrive.

They can turn your electricity off for non-payment. :roll:

haha, not quite, didn't even spark when i did it. (put on heavy gloves, thick coat and safety glasses).

I had just moved into a new place and the electic company wasn't going to come for 3-4 days, so I went ahead and did their job for them.

EDIT: of course i turned off all of the breakers to ensure that there was no current draw before I made the connection.

Same thing happened to us. It is your responsibility to get it switched to your name. After ~3-6 months, they will shut off your service and send the apartment company a bill, which will in turn, go to you.

its been 6months almost (moved in Mid March) and SMUD has still not billed me for my electricity use and i believe i even told them that they didnt bill me.

The only transfer needed is a name I believe. No signature required. If they can prove they haven't been there since then but you have, you're getting the bill. Rest assured, someone will... that is unless it's included in your lease.

No, from my firsthand experience with this. Usually they do one of two things. Either they pull out the meter and turn it 90 degrees, or they pull out the meter and put plastic isolators on the posts.

EDIT: Back to the original post. They probably took a final reading when the last group left. When they send the bill to the next group its going to include everything after taht reading.

I had that happen in my last aprtment. What will happen is that they will see that a certian account under no name is getting an unsual amount of electricity for an empty aprtment. They will send you a letter telling you to make an account under your name or they will shut the electricty off. I went about 7 months w/o and electrcity bill or a notice. After they made me put an account under my name, I told them i just moved in so they just had me pay for the remaining months.

That is illegal, if they realize you connected your own power you can have you power cut and will probably face legal problems.
