I'm getting fed up - XP locks up PC again

Okay, I had a problem a few weeks ago where all of a sudden XP would not boot up at all. I thought it was a hard drive problem, so I bought a brand new hard drive. I installed XP on my new drive, and all was well, until tonight, however.

I was working just fine, then I decided to load the MediaFace II CD labeler program from Fellowes. It got halfway through the install, and it locked up. I waited for a few minutes, then I tried to shut down. I wouldn't let me, so I hit the reset button. All I get is three beeps and then nothing. The power button does nothing, and the reset button just results in the same three beeps. I unplugged the machine and waited a couple of more minutes then plugged it in again. Three more beeps. I unplugged again, connected the drive to the onboard IDE slot, and tried again. Three more beeps. I have no idea what to try now.

Please give me any and all suggestions. I know it can't be the hard drive. Is this a motherboard problem, or is my machine incapable of running XP?

I have a Dell Dimension XPS B1000r (P III 1ghz) with 256 MB RDRAM.

Thanks,
Brian

Yea, I think it's a video card problem. I have a gateway computer (which you should have bought in the first place, but we're not talking about that) and my whole case is screwless. There is a retainer clip that holds all of my AGP, and ICE cards, which gets loose sometimes, and I think it allowed my metal heatsink to touch my SB Live! card - so I couldn't boot up. I was getting three beeps too. I have also had the same video problem when I was using video drivers that weren't XP certified 🙂

Actuall, it was a memory problem. The three beeps say to reseat the memory module. I removed it and immediately replaced it, and it worked. Anyone know what would cause this? Why would my computer locking up cause this?

Thanks,
Brian

It wasn't your operating system that caused the problem it was the memory module not being seated well that caused it. It was probably never seated well as this was a problem for a while.
It's working now, so good luck!
