I'm getting a part-time job at the mall. I might have shortchanged myself

Well it's the holiday season and being a broke college student, I applied to several stores in the mall. Anyhow I have some experience in the sales field (one years worth) and I'm 90% sure I landed a job at one of the stores I applied to. The problem is in the application I put myself down for $10/hour and I just found out that less qualified people are being paid $11/hour.

I'm sure it's chump change compared to the baller status internet daters making $60k/CAD a year, but it sort of sucks knowing I shortchanged myself. Anyhow I'm going in for the second interview and I could use some tips on how to persuade the boss that I'm worth $11 or possibly more than what I initially put down on my application.

I would tell him that while your sales skills are great you are also multi-talented and have a knack for finding bulk meat vendors.

Wait a second....
1. People get paid >$10 an hour to work at the mall? Non-managers?
2. There are people who are more qualified or less qualified to work at the mall? Non-managers?

Most employers are going to pay the same type of worker the same wage. They will probably offer you the $11 they pay everyone else.

See the thing is I have a friend there, she's currently being paid $8.50 and having a hard time getting even a $1 raise (management changed from when she was hired).

Amazingly enough, yes. I got $12.00 + commission (about $15.00/hr avg) during the summer of my freshman year in college--and that was back in 2000. That was at a fairly nice luggage store that has since gone out of business. But that, combined with the 40% employee discount... not too bad!

EDIT: And, yes, that was in a suburb of Atlanta, not California.

Highly unlikely + I need the cash, this store will probably take me and start me next week, I have applications to several other stores as well, but those probably will not be calling me back for several months.

not true. i got hired along with several other temp workers at a helpdesk. i was getting paid about $10 an hour less than one of them. she made $24, i made $14.

basically she was really good at negotiating her wage, and i didnt try at all with negotiating mine. i basically said 'pay me better than what you'd pay a student worker'

worst thing that could have possibly come out of my mouth.

I got $15/hour + commission working at the mall

Whoever is working there now is probably going to bring in 4k for December alone on commission.

Depends on where you work:

Cell phones, shoe sales (nordstroms, etc), Mens clothing (high-end dress) make $$

I wouldnt recommend anyone in school taking those jobs however. You will have no time for school. Exactly why I am not working there anymore.
