Don't let it sit doing nothing. At the very least drop it into a 9-12 month CD. You can get about $1000/year from $20,000.

I suppose. Money "invested" into a primary residence isn't really a classic means of investment. Yes it's generally a safe harbor for your money, but a primary residence has value in use, as opposed to normal avenues of investment which have no true values in use.

Your best bet is to invest in typical money oriented investments like IRAs, CDs, or mutual funds.

Doesn't that money come in small increments, like $40.00 each payday,(after taxes) until your enlistment is over?
Just asking, cause 32 years ago, I was offered a very nice deal to reenlist, but the money part (a lot at that time) was going to be spread out over the 6 years of the new enlistment, seems like it was going to be like $6.00/wk.
Better check this before you sign anything!

QFT!
Truer words were never spoken.
They are NOT obligated to, nor will they, follow through on ANYTHING they have promised, said, or implied.
If it's not in writing, witnessed, and at least Notarized, your chances of getting it are very, very slim, usually non-existant.

(Take it from me, a former Crew Chief who was solemnly sworn to as being placed as an "F-4 Pilot" by my recruiter, In Basic, I was nearly laughed out of the office when I told them what my recruiter promised me and even written on my enlistment papers! I had to fight like hell just to get ANY position that involved flight whatsoever, Crew Chiefs got the most time in the air, so that's what I settled for. At least it was better than infantry!)
