I'm FIRED!

well, one argument is all it took! holy shit, im 30 years old, probably worked for 35 different bosses (many in construction so changing guards was common) and i have never been fired. never had a boss who didnt see the value in me even if they didnt really care for me.

but this guy? he says since i dont like him (which i never even hinted at) that im fired.

the argument started yesterday because i went on a service call during my time. i had just been to this guys house, and he paid good money for me to hook up his home theater system. he calls back later and says he cant figure a couple things out.

i knew the boss would charge him more money, but i knew the guy wasnt going to be happy with that. so i told him i will stop by his house on my way home and walk him through some things.

and the boss finds out the next day and is PISSED. he told me i cant be doing things like that, its not my decision and he wanted to know why my attitude was poor the last few weeks. i didnt understand, and i asked him if i had done anything wrong. he said no, but i was turning into the other employee he has and that worries him.

i felt insulted at that point, and i told him that. then he told me to tell him why i felt insulted, and that my attitude needs to change. thats were i kinda lost it, and i told him HIS attitude is whats crap, and its effecting everyone in the shop. this was first minute in the morning, and we worked all day peacefully after that.

well, this morning, he calls and says im fired because i dont like him and hes never had anyone talk to him like that. i said i was just being honest like he asked so we can work things out... but that doesnt matter.

unemployment should be there at least. i JUST got a glowing 3 month review from the guy, with a raise and not a single negative comment on it. if he tries to fight this claim i will be royaly upset..... what an idiot!

he just got done telling me how much i have done for him too. he said i caught the shop up to speed in 4 months when he thought it was going to be another year+. i guess i did too good of a job, because he doesnt need me anymore!

whatever. work was getting slower by the day. 1 out of 10 customers that walked in left happy, because he overcharged the crap out of everyone. getting fired wasnt exactly the plan i had in mind, but at the same time i knew this boat wasnt going to float forever.

just wow. what a feeling! i have always quit my jobs in the past... this is very different! i dont feel bad though, because i certainly didnt warrant this.

Well, you can't do things like that. What happens now if the guy complains that you stole something? What would have happened if you tripped and hurt yourself?

Litigation nightmare for the company, as you're representing them, even if it is on your time off.

I would've fired you too.

35 bosses says a lot, no matter what industry you're in. At some point you should looks towards yourself and your attitude, and what might be causing this.

Don't argue with the boss unless you're willing to get fired. Sounds like the guy needed to be woken up though. Still, what do you care if the boss charges someone for a house call? No way I would have gone to the guy's house on my own time.

Yeah this too. The only thing those 35 bosses have in common is you.

This. Unfortunately in this day and age you just have to avoid stuff like that. Though if your boss was an asshole then this is probably for the best.

how is it any different then when im actually on a documented service call? and since it was on my time and not documented, how could it ever get back to the company? futhermore, i sold a $150 tv bulb when i was there. boss cared more about being right then he did about what actually happened (which was PROFIT).

like i said, i worked construction for 10 years. bosses changed by the job at times. the fact that i had that many shows how good i was.

He pointed out that the industry and particular JOB he's in, he's had BOSSES come and go. Not necessarily he came and went.

QFT! The people on average are litigious ass-holes and any act of kindness on your part wouldn't "matter" in the court of law.

Sounds like it's time for you to go into the business for yourself and compete with said douche-bag boss.

You're really looking at it the wrong way here, man. While I sympathize that you lost your job, you technically were in the wrong. The sooner you can own that and move on, the better off you'll be.

That was a customer of the company you worked for. Period. End of argument. What you did could be construed as side work, and stealing from the company. At the very least it's a conflict of interest. There's nothing wrong with doing side work, on your own time, for people who are not existing customers of the company you work for.

DING DING DING!

you won the thread. i just talked to dad two days ago about doing this. he said he is going to try to finance me $10k to start up in my garage.

boss knew i wanted to run a business someday too.. it was part of the reason he hired me. he wanted someone to run his business so he didnt have to be there all the time. i showed that i was more then capable of that, but like this argument showed, he was constantly far more worried about being "right" then he was about making money.

this guy treats his other employee like shit too. way worse then he treated me, and part of the argument was me standing up for the other guy- which i think is the real reason he fired me. he said i was turning into the other guy, which i snapped back "thats completely insulting. nobody effects what i do. i do the job i do because i chose to be that way. YOU are the one who is effecting me. YOUR attitude is completely unacceptable".

and thats what he held onto. 5 months of great work and he fires me becasue i told him something nobody ever does, yet there wouldnt be a soul in the world that disagrees with me. whatever! he just gave me a green light to start my own thing!

how is it side work when i sold the bulb for the boss? i didnt make a penny on it.

i have been doing service calls for over a decade. i do things like this all the time. if you were somewhere, and they just need a quick hand with something you just did, you try to help. i have never had a boss that wasnt anything but THRILLED that i would do things like that. the fact that this guy got pissed about it was just a joke.

Hire the other employees from where you got fired if they were good employs but got grinded down by the boss. Just another way to stick it to him.

theres only one other tech, and he runs the consumer side of the shop. he has a 3 year no-work/disclosure clause though. i dont know why he signed that... but i think it says even if he gets fired he cant work in the city doing that stuff for 3 years.

we just talked last friday about starting our own shop. he is good at what he does, but he is scared of the legal issues if he does it. i try to tell him not to worry about it, becasue a judge isnt going to stop someone from working.. but this boss is loaded with money so the guy is just flat out scared of him.

Youre in the right OP. Good luck in finding a better boss who takes constructive criticism.

I got a friend in construction in the iron workers union. He is a top notch foreman and he sees more bosses come and go than the OP has.

You're really not supposed to do something like that. While technically its the right thing to do, a lot of problems can come to your boss by you going around doing stuff on your own like that since you still work(ed) for him. What if something goes missing at one of these unscheduled stops or something goes wrong and someone gets hurt? Litigation. Lawsuits are the reason why we can't have nice things anymore because a few bad apples hurt the whole crop.

When you are in a management position you'll understand over-zealous employees are not the best to have when you are in a customer facing position.

You were in the wrong. You over stepped your boundaries and then got into a heated exchange with the owner.
It is his business not yours. If he wants to charge customers for coming back out that is his decision, not yours.
