I bought a HUD house a few years back, and the book that I got was a "everything" book from Home Depot. Great investment for 30 bucks. It has tips, and notes for nearly everything, with also "warnings" about common mistakes, and a few stories of repercussions of taking the easy route on certain jobs.

I would check out your local home depot... They also have more focused books, but I never got into things, past general repair and basic stuff for around the house like wood planters and workbenches and whatnot.

I have both of these books and they offer a good overview, but I supplement them with indepth electrical and plumbing books, a well.

First suggestion-don't buy stuff at HD. The big items are fine but they rape w/ the small stuff. Plus their "experts" are idiots. Use the specialty distributors first because they can help if things break/leak/catch fire etc.

And congrats on the house! Did the same 3 months ago.

Congrats! It's a nice area up there, I've spent a lot of time up in that area. I hope to do the same thing soon, but I'll be moving out of California to North Carolina to afford it. Too expensive here!

I'd rather go to HD than any of my local hardware stores. First, I know it will be open when I need it, not like the 5pm closing at the local independant places. I also won't hear the grumbling of the guy behind the counter when I pull out my CC, plus 99 times out of 100 they will have exactly what I need.

Now I know not to trust the workers, and to open up every box I get from them, and not to buy their plants, but their selection is pretty much top notch.

Selection maybe, but not pricing or knowledge.

Don't bother with a book, call me. No worry's, no problems, just write a check and get everything you want done, done.

Wow that's nice. Must be a great place in that location. It's gorgeous out there.

Can you give us some information about it? Do you mind us asking what you paid? (I understand if you dont want to talk about that though). I always have a large interest in property.

There is no bad time to buy, I did it in 91, lost 30k the first month I owned my home, now it's worth 4 times what I paid for it, and my taxes are cheap as dirt. So he might take a short term hit, though I really doubt it, but in the long run he'll do just fine.

Until Peak Oil makes it worth the big ZERO :)

Though I'm buying a home soon.

Just have to make it self-sufficient as possible.

Have Fun!
