I'm finally getting the Mac experience!

Unfortunately our forum software isn't Mac compatible. My poor G3 laptop running Firefox 2.0 can make a thread title, but this text box isn't recognized as a text box and the forum won't let me post a blank message. It took literally 15 minutes on my 1Gb/s internet connection to get from forums.anandtech.com to being able to post a message.

The battery won't hold a charge, but I can choose between OS9 and OSX.

Anyone running any old systems? I need to figure out if any browsers can support the forums.

😛

IMO in 2018, if the Mac can't run at least OS X 10.10, it's not worth running OS X on it (although it may work OK with Linux). I stopped using G3 Macs > 15 years ago (!) and retired all my G4 Macs roughly 5 years ago.

However, if you're still determined to use a PowerPC Mac to play with OS X, then try TenFourFox which can run on 10.4.11.

BTW, last year I bought an aluminum 2008 MacBook5,1 Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz for US$150 off Kijiji. I then upgraded it to 4 GB RAM and SSD (both of which I already had), and then installed macOS 10.13 on it. It only officially supports up to 10.11, but 10.13 works fine too with a patched installer. Another decent option to play around with would be a white MacBook6,1 Core 2 Duo 2.26 GHz. Those would give you a more realistic Mac experience.

EDIT:

BTW, I'm told what you want is a browser that can support TLS 1.2 for use in the modern world (ie. 2018). You can test that here:

Alas it's only 10.3 😛

It looks like it only supports up to Firefox 2.0. I'll probably either recycle it or try to find someone to give it to. I offered it up to the FreeBSD folks and they politely declined...

I'm hoping Apple comes out with a new Mini Mac soon. I'd like to play around with a useful Apple computer. I almost picked up a MacBook Pro in 2016, but there were a few things holding me back.

Which Mac is it?

TenFourFox will run on 10.4.11 as mentioned, and 10.4.11 only requires a 300 MHz G3 with Firewire and 256 MB RAM.

Mind you, trying to run anything on a 300 MHz G3 and 256 MB RAM would be hell. I got rid of my iBook G3 600 MHz in 2002 because it was too slow. 😛 I stopped running our 1.07 GHz G4 MacBook with 1.25 GB RAM and TenFourFox a long time ago too because it was too slow.
