I'm honestly kind of shocked... I haven't flipped out, I really don't know what I am right now. I feel like anything could set me off at any moment.

So basically... Power surge + cheap power supply = broken everything.

What _IS_ working:
- One of my hard drives (120 gig, just had the OS and programs on it).
- Case (no fans! the fans are all dead.)
- optical drive (I think? the tray opens/closes, but I didnt test read/write)

What I'm not sure about:
- Sound card... forgot to test it

What's tested and not working:
- PSU
- Main hard drive (with a lot of homework on it, plus my documents in general)
- motherboard
- CPU
- 1 memory stick is catastrophic, the other fails memtest.
- Video card is severely artifacting
- Case fans

Uhg... I hate life right now.

But enough about me, how have you guys been today?

Do you not back up your stuff?

Anyway, hope things get better for you. I know they did for me - just had my quantum mechanics final today and one more left before I fly home on Friday morning.

Need any parts?

For future reference, use Google Documents, if you can, for uploads fo important documents, and CD/DVD and/or flash drive backups. Redundancy to the max.

Mozy Home, 2GB free online backup.

Head down to an electronics store and get a external harddrive case. Throw your drive into it, plug it into a campus computer to get your documents.

What you should've done -

1) Buy a laptop.
2) Backup your papers on flash drive.
3) Surge Protector.

Hey OP, you still there? Don't jump off the library roof man!

What kind of hard drive do you own? If you can find another drive of the same model, you can swap out the circuit board on the bottom of the drive and get your data off.

The date is probably fine, the surge more than likely just fried the circuit board. Been there, done that.

I have a laptop, but I was working on a huge project on my desktop... I have an old revision on my laptop, so not all hope is lost. It's not a paper, it's software, so Google Docs wouldn't have worked.

This still sucks hard, though. It's probably going to be late :(

And I don't have an economical way to back up my computer ever day... Time to start saving.

^^ Hmm true, but it's a bit of a time constraint at the moment. Anyways, I have another drive, just not the same model. Good idea, though.

Wait, you're talking about a software project? Sorry to add to your misery but, You're A COMPLETE MAROON! Every CS student learns after the first semester, if they didn't learn it before, to put your files on a disc or removeable drive every time you work on them!

Or you work on a system that gets backed up nightly

Also, why would you feel unstable? It's just work. Even a huge code project can be rebuilt. It will take much less time writing it the second time.
