AA, EO, I don't really care what you call it. It all sux in my books. I don't think race should ever be used to give someone an advantage over another person when it comes to being hired for a position.

What gets me is that the position may say stuff like EOE and AA, but if you send in two resumes with basically the same background and different names, the resume with the English name gets selected for interview over the other name. Doesn't happen in all areas of the US, but in some areas, it happens.

Wrong.
AA and EO are different things.
Many job apps / postings you see in the U.S. will mention both. They will say that they are an AA and an EO employer. In reality, the two are mutually exclusive. Either you give equal opportunity to all applicants OR you give preferential treatment to some races over others (AA). You CANNOT do both.

You absolutely can.

AA: Encouraging more minorities to apply by posting your job in predominantly black(or whatever) neighbourhoods/communities/etc.
EO: Hiring the best person for the job regardless of race even if the 1 white guy who shows up is better than the 2 black guys and 3 asians.

Perhaps it depends on the varying interpretations of AA. From what I have seen, AA does not mean you "encourage" more minorities to apply. It means you go through extra effort to try to hire more minorities. This not only includes the advertising of the position, but includes the hiring decision as well. Most HR managers interpretation of AA is that if two candidates are similarly qualified, you offer the job to the minority. Now I suppose that different people may have a different interpretation of AA, but according to my definition, a company CANNOT be an AA and EO employer.

I spent all day Friday conducting interviews of college juniors and seniors for an internship with my company. Our head of HR STRONGLY ENCOURAGED us to select a "diverse" candidate. In other words, to avoid making our HR person angry (never a good thing to do), we had to choose a minority student for this internship. The only reason I went along with this without protest was that this was a situation where all of these students were going to get internships, the only question was which company would choose them. So because I knew the white male students would still get positions, I didn't feel quite as offended about it. But having been involved in interviews for permanent positions as well, I know that the HR dept here has a goal of hiring more minority employees. They do not make hiring decisions with a color blind view, like EO employers should.

yeah it's called "positive discrimination" over here. Fvcking bullshit.

Whoever is best for the job gets the job, nothing to do with skin colour. Employers need to have x% of ethnic minorities, x% women, x% disabled people in order to be an equal opportunities employer. Of course, the non minorities get stung in the butt because of this.

This is something that really irritates me. I think there should just be no mention of race or creed, apart from when it comes to history lessons. None of this MOBO shite (where's the MOWO awards? or would that be racist?), no sticking with your own type, no black/asian/whatever groups at unis... That's integration, just as blond people get along with dark haired people in prominently caucasian societies: no one mentions it or feels they stand out or needs to stick together. It's simply not an issue.

I doubt we'll ever see this, however, as many minorities simply do not want to integrate.

My 2c.
