For this project, you will create a substantial website (around 10-15 individual pages, with a fair amount of information on each one) that serves as an introduction to and discussion of a topic of your choice. (Please, topics you wouldn't mind showing your grandmother--keep it family-friendly.)
This should be a topic of some social issue, on which there is substantial public discourse and significance. For example, general info on your favorite band wouldn't really be an acceptable topic, but violent lyrics in some popular music would.
This should be a topic of interest to you, and on which you feel you can take a stand, and support it.
The purpose of a portal site is to provide information and links on your topic, creating a portal or gateway to the subject for anyone visiting your page. This will be a multi-page project, and hopefully one that you will continue to add to and support after this class. (This type of project tends to look good on a resumé.)
Things your portal site needs to have:
1. An introduction to your topic, and an exploration of the public discourse surrounding it. Why is it significant?
2. Substantial information about the subject, both in terms of background and current information.
3. Images
4. Links to more information about it-where can visitors to your site find out more?
5. Links to news sources where visitors can find more current information.
6. Links to a search engine that you know can locate more sites on your topic, and tips for maximizing your visitors' search strategies there.
The point of this project is to create a substantial site about a subject that interests you, and to give you the opportunity to create a multi-page Web site on your subject.
