i'm downloading debian right now...7 cd's :Q anyway, this isnt my first time trying to get into linux, i've tried with redhat and i think i tried bsd once, but they didnt exactly tickle my fancy (didnt know what i was doing so i whipped out good 'ol winxp again). I am going to install debian, and if i can't figure it out...you better believe i'm getting b00ks and what not. I AM GOING TO PULL THROUGH THIS TIME DAMIT! if anybody has any quick install tips or something while my cd's are downloading, please dont hesitate to respond at all :)

"Running Linux" is a good book. Also check out the #debian channels on various IRC servers.

It's not too bad. Heck, I installed Debian in 1997, with the help of a friend. We were excited because he got X set up. :)

I installed some version of Red Hat called Mandrake on my old computer a long time ago. It seemed cool for awhile but the lack of software that runs on Linux started to bug me. I think it is mostly for setting up servers and networking stuff.

Rad Hat and Mandrake are to different distros of Linux. Mandrake is not a version of Red Hat.

Nah. I do all of my normal computing stuff in Debian. Email, browsing, watching Trogdor burninate stuff, banking, word processing, programming, web development, a little gaming, DVD watching, music playing, everything that I can do in Windows.

The only reason that I boot to Windows is to play certain games which I can't get to work in Debian. Namely Falcon 4 and BF1942.

You can run servers and stuff, but I don't.

That's cool. A lot of the stuff I wanted to download off the Internet didn't come in a Linux format though. I think that is what bugged me the most.

I'm thinking you'll find, like i did, Linux is just to damn geeky and I'm a geek after the first try at install.

I've installed sun solaris 2.8 and it was easier...Ran Linux for a week but it was'nt doing it for me.,

That's because the vast majority of software that people run in windows is windows-only software. When you run linux, you don't go trying to install windows software, you install equivelants or similar software.

Or, *GASP* learn something new and start using things unlike anything else you've used in windows.

Be sure to bring an air tank because you're gonna need it when you're sinking to the bottom of that pool.

Unless you have a very inconsistent, or extremely slow, network at your house I would suggest downloading the Compact Debian Boot Floppies and starting simple. You can do your base install right over the network to the Debian package servers/mirrors .

If you are interested PM me and I can help get you started.
