I'm curious.... (and some of Soy's thoughts)

In the past we've had threads come up about drafts and selective serivce and had many many people who said that they wouldn't be willing to go to war because they don't believe in violence. After today's events I'm curious how many of you would change your tune if a particular country took responsibility for todays events.

I don't see a large scale war that would need drafts to be involved with this incident, but take it as a hypothetical question. Do you feel like you'd now serve your country if they asked for your help?

I think what really touches me about the whole situation though is that while often I hear about robbery, murder and other things every day and think that the world just gets worse and worse, today I hear that lines of blood donors were so long they had to be turned away, think of those who lost their lives trying to save the lives of others, and it makes me feel oddly enough better about our country. We might not have the strongest of morals at all times, but in times of need we all band together and help each other, thats just comforting.

God bless america, fly the flag aove your house, on your car, or wherever and be proud.

Would I go to war for our country? Maybe. It would depend on what I thought the war would accomplish. If I thought it would protect us, in the Uniteds States, from a real threat, I just might. If it's war for the purpose of revenge, I can't say I would support it.

Either way, I can't support the draft. You can't protect freedom by enslaving all the men between 18-25 in your society.

I would go to war for my country no matter what the situation. I feel that if we are fighting a war, my non-involvment only helps us lose that war and causes several other lives to be lost.

short answer, yes

long answer, I would do anything, anything to protect the happiness and lives of the ones I love most. They matter so much to me, and they deserve freedom and protection. If we're at war, we need help, I'd join. Its something I believe in, this country is my home, my life, and I'd protect it for myself, as well as others.

Yes, I'm scared as hell right now, I'm scared of a war. Yeah, I'd probably sh1t myself if I was being shot at. I'd still shoot back. I know I'd probably regret it, while I was out

I can't see how someone wouldn't be willing to. How can you turn your back on your country when it needs you the most? :(

I wouldn't just because I would be useless on a battlefield. I could never kill anyone (at least directly), I say this because I work for the dept of defense, and if we went to war I would work 24 hours a day towards our cause, but on a battlefield, I guess I could take up some enemy bullets....that's not really the way I want to go out though.

While I doubt they'd take me (flat feet, sh!tty vision, major allergies), if I were called I would go willingly.

Ok, what if your brother or your dad was killed today by the terrorists. Would you join the service to go kick ass on the bad guys and avenge them?

Join me if you know this song:

"If tomorrow all the things were gone I'd worked for all my life,
And I had to start again with just my children and my wife,..."

"I'd thank my lucky stars to be living here today
'Cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can't take that away..."

"And I'm proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me
And I'll gladly stand up, next to you, and defend her still today
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land, God bless the USA...."

"From the lakes of Minnesota
To the hills of Tennessee
Across the plains of Texas
From sea to shining sea
From Detroit down to Houston
And New York to L.A.
There's pride in every American heart
And it's time we stand and say

And I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I gladly stand up
Next to you
And defend her still today
Cause there ain't no doubt
I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A."

Thank you, bunker.

Whenever I hear this song, it brings tears to my eyes. Especially now.

Untill today I would have said no. But watching all of this I thought about what if I was on one of the planes or was in the Trade Center, or if a member of my family was in that situation. I would be taken to another level and unleash the fury a single human can possess to bring the people who did this to justice in my mind which would probably be death. So in answer to your question, I'd be the first in line. (Navy or Marines)

Personally, I believe that with Civil rights comes civil responsibility. Included in "civil responsibility" is defending the country from attack. That is part of the reason I'm in the National Guard.I'm not for conscription (draft), but I do feel everyone should go through some sort of "universal military training"- say 8 weeks at the end of their Senior year of school- with no other requirement for service. Surely that's not asking too much.

If you have moral or religious reasons against serving, that's fine- several men have won the Medal of Honor without firing a shot- they were medics, and felt they couldn't kill.

I can't say I would willingly enlist or want to be drafted, as things stand today. I wouldn't because I have a wife and a 4 month old son to care for. That said, should my number come up, I also wouldn't dogde the draft in any way.

The draft is fair in the since that it uses random chance to decide who goes and who stays. Certainly, that is the only way to do it.
