I'm crashing servers

I have to work very early this morning, around 4? Due to the stupid pager going off. I figured since my shift starts at 6am, I might as well go to work early and do some more MS04-11,12,13,14 patches.

So far, I crashed 4 servers already. 1 due to SCSI card failure, 1 web server with SQL issues, and 2 that I couldn't tell because we don't have RIBLO on it.

The highest record here is 66 servers. This guy that used to work here mistyped the script for norton system center.... and the rest, is history.

What is your record of servers that wouldn't come back up?

Well i dont have any computer servers crash. but once i worked at this restraunt and one of the servers tripped on this little kid playing under a table, he fell and dropped all this food, hit his head and was knocked out... he didnt come back up for like 10 mins!

3. that's why we have a replicated test lab with vmware running all platforms.

we just got those bulletins from PSS yesterday. you know what they say, the early bird gets the worms...and the BSOD 😉

I call foul. Your thread title lead me to believe it would be interesting. Bait and switch.

It's 6am, and I'm bored to tears. Perhaps something interesting will happen soon so I can post it.

😀

I've seen 3000+ servers down at one time, but that was the networking department fvck up, not mine 😉

personally, I've never gone above 4.

I had all of my core switched all get burned at the SAME time a while back.... Lightening struck my building and it hit the internal Cat5e somehow and fried all of my core switches..... Just all of a sudden none of my servers had a link light or anything....Needless to say, with 30 highly paid programmers sitting on their thumbs, my SVP was irritated, but, the suits learned the value of having standby equipment as I have always told them.

haha the damn pager in the middle of the night. That used to be fun. I'm a web guy so was only in charge of 6 servers and I'd cringe at the thought of having to apply any patches because for those things... "leave well enough alone"... but it had to be done. I've had 4 of them down at once with mgmt and the customers breathing down my back... gotta love the pressure and stress of a 95%-of-the-time stress-free position eh ?

a pager is the devil.... They make me carry a nextel blackberry with all of my management tools on it. It's funny to see the look on someone's face when they ask me what I am doing on it and I tell them I'm ssh'ed into a server or I am rebooting someone's PC lol. I played a good joke on my CFO when I was trying to get him to buy me the management tools for my blackberry,he asked what can you do with it? I said watch, I listed all files on his C: drive and sent a netsend mssg (only internally allowed - blocked externally by the fw's) and then proceeded to reboot it all within 10 seconds right before his eyes. He was sold immediately.

damn thats cool. how much them sucker costs?

They're about $400 here. The software requires the blackberry enterprise server software (used for message redirection on the server, not desktops, about $2000). The software is called Idokorro Mobile Admin (about $2000 per 10 servers managed). They have a trial of it you can try out if you have the aforementioned software. You just load the Idokorro on a server somewhere, point it to the blackberry server, and it works like a charm.
