My roommate pulls similar sh!t, except he just shuts off the AC completely. It sucks when I go home and just want to rest, and I walk in to a wall of heat when walking in my door.

I leave the AC around 70-73, which I feel is very comfortable. He doesn't realize its simple for him to throw on pants, or a sweatshirt, and be warm, but if its 80 in here, and I am sweating, that I can't somehow become cooler, without the AC.

He also has some fvcked up thing going on in his head where he thinks that saves us money. He is too thick skulled to realize that its cheaper to maintain a temp, than it is to shut off the AC, then turn it on, and have it pull the temp down back where it was.

You could always put the AC on a timer switch to compromise (that is assuming that the AC does not have any kind of power-saving mode where it turns on and off as temperatures increase).

What I don't get is that I think he does it to save money, but he is always leaving lights on all over the place.

It's a digital one, so it switches on and off automagically.

Smack him?

I would if he were home.

Lock him out.

This would lock out my other roommates as well though. I honestly think if we did change the locks on him, he would just go away and not bother knocking/ringing the door bell.

Tell your other roommate to come home early, and THEN lock the other dude out.

I had this roommate who would always set the thermostat to 65 when he went to sleep. I would always wake up with a snuffle. He's gone now.

That is strange too. I am not asking to be cold, but comfortable...70ish.

I realize how it could work......

Id never hear the end of it from my parents though. His parents & my parents have been friends for 20+ years.

My room mate insists that its "comfortable in here" with just a fan on and we dont need to run the AC at all. There are times that the thermostat downstairs tops out around 85 and its definitely warmer upstairs in my room with my west facing window. I close blinds and run fans but it made no difference. I somewhat remedied the problem by installing a ceiling fan yesterday and that will hopefully help some. I guarantee that the AC will be run though whether he likes it or not because as it was mentioned above, comfort > small savings.

I love running it at 65-70 degrees, at least when I'm on vacation and electricity doesn't cost a cent. :D There's nothing worse than being hot IMO, I can't IMAGINE living in a house w/ 80 degree AC. Fans do work pretty well though.

HOLY CRAP, ancient bump. Sorry. :(

Similar situation here. My cousin is living with me for awhile and he is cold natured. I'll come home and it is 80 degrees in the house, and he is sitting on the couch in shorts. PUT SOME CLOTHES ON. I'll then turn the thermostat back to 66 and the house feels much better.

My girlfriend does similar stuff, but at least she has the mind to put on one of my long shirts and wear pants when she is cold.

Just a wild idea but have you tried talking to him about it?

Lights eat a LOT less power than the AC.

70ish is cold to me. Temperature is subjective.

During the day I keep it at 78F and at night 72F during the summer. The power savings between 70 and 78 aren't small, either. Not when it's almost 100F outside every afternoon.
