I'm convinced some people in Halo found a way to cheat

Or at least to take advantage of the glitches/bugs in the game. This becomes increasingly apparent around once you reach level 30-35, especially on the swords match.

Things that I've witnessed so far - people doing a charge from way further than I can. For example, both of us are running towards each other - my cursor isn't red yet, so I cannot charge, yet he easily charges and kills me before I even get a chance to do anything.

Another example is people swords killing you while you charge. Don't know if it's a lag or latency issue, but it's been happening a lot lately.

Last and not least, when you get a jump on somebody and are about to finish them off with a melle they sort of glitch out and you whiff completely and then somehow they "assassinate' you, even though the whole time the guy is in front of you.

I think all of the issues you've mentioned could probably be attributed to lag.

I play on the wireless adapter and the latency really makes a huge difference.
Though cheating did exist in halo 2.
You have both to worry about.

I simply can't play Halo multiplayer because it is still full of kids who act like wannabe thugs and think it's cool to curse at you and call you a noob when you die.

I'm used to hearing kids shout a certain other n-word every time I die.

If any bridging or similar is possible yet, I assume xbox-scene and the related members IRC chats would be very public. At least it has held true in the past that theses "secrets" are very hard to keep concealed very long. I am sure it is simply lag. As far as modding to increase the skill of a player, I don't think the HDD has been unlocked (decrypted) as of yet to do this type of mod. And I think the only major mod to the 360 is flashing the optical drive to play "backed-up" games.

Never underestimate the twitch-fest gaming tenacity of a 12-17 year old while under the effects of nicotine (if smoking), caffeine (if chain-chugging Mt. Dews), and or sugar (once again Mt. Dew).

And that can be used to cheat. Standby or refresh cheat, induced lag etc.

Smack talk them back. I made some kid cry because I made so much fun of him. Comes from years of PC gaming though :p

What should really concern you is that they are probably sitting in Beverly Hills or some equivalent locale playing on a 150" projection screen, calling you the n-word, while having some maid feed them chocolate covered strawberries.

This is a pretty good visual representation of what I'm talking about

Notice how the heads and the boxes aren't always aligned? This also happens with melee weapons, you can find odd points where the hit box doesn't reach you even though the animation does.

wow, talk about old school. That sort of hit detection model is absolutely last century.

Most of the game engines of the last five years use a collision (Level Of Detail) mesh that is nowhere that primitive. [LOD0 is typically the highest res texture map and polygon count(other than the fake arms for the view model), LOD1 is the middle distance mesh with maybe 40% of the polycount of LOD0, and the long distance model LOD2 is around 40% of LOD1.] Usually the collision mesh is either the LOD2 or a custom low-res mesh that conforms to the general volume of the render version.

The main problem is ping/lag coordinating of everyone's position and shot timing. If 2 people have the roughly the same low ping, then they get updates on each others position and collision mesh animation at roughly the same time and rate. If one player has a slow upload bandwidth rate then he's sending his position information less frequently than people with faster bandwidth. The result is the higher lag(slow band/high ping) player seems to be doing one thing and the next instant he's out of your view standing to your side killing you. If it's really bad when the high pinger runs the mesh will stutter along popping up every meter in the same pose like the stop motion chase scenes on the Benny Hill show.

In this month's EGM, they had an interview with some Bungie guys where they mentioned differences in helmet sizes and differences in size between Elites and Spartans in the context of target sizes. So I don't think they use boxes to detect hits.
