I'm considering walking away from job....I just can't take the stress anymore

My job pays very well (for my area). I have a great company to work for. I have great benefits. But I can't pull my end of the bargain.

I take care of around 30 retail locations in IA, WI, ND, SD, NE, AZ, & NV. I've got two corporate offices and soon to be a third. And I handle all IT needs myself. The last 3 months have royally sucked.

In february I did a 42 hour straight stint when a raid 1 array blew up in AZ. Along with it the backups were corrupted and we had to basically do a complete rebuild.

I've had a raid 5 array go on the fritz and luckily it rebuilt itself and saved me from having to do a reload of the exchange box.

I've had a couple rouge laptops that I didn't get caught up to date and managed to wreck havoc with some of the latest worms that are running rampant.

I've been on the phone since 8:00PM last night trying to get a server up and running in AZ. To add to the fire I had a hard drive go down in a workstation in NE about an hour ago.

Some of could have been preventable with proper updates/virus scans. So that's my fault. Some of it is just that I'm too spread thin. Some of it is just plain old bad luck.

The worse part is that we are adding another 30 retail locations that are very "needy" from an IT standpoint. Lots of equipment, lots of stuff to break, lots of dollars lost if it goes down.

Between my wifes income, and what we've got in the bank, I've got enough to last me over a year of no income from me. I've got about a months worth of vacation that I can cash out since I can never take it. My wife graduates in a year in a very lucrative profession.

I'm just really considering turning in my two weeks, getting somebody hired to take my place, setting up a contract with my current employers to provide assitance to the new person at an hourly rate, and moving into a lower paying position, that doen't require travel, doesn't require me to stay up working on equipment for 24 hours straight, that doesn't have a cell phone ringing at 5:30 in the morning. Ect.

I've got very little time because I'm supposed to move from IA to AZ next month. I'll be living away from wife for a year and I'm really not looking forward to that either.

This thread is one part rambling from sleepless exhaustion, one part wits end frustration, and one part looking for some small amount of sympathy.

you should push your boss to hire someone under you, maybe 2 people. It seems like you're doing way too much, and support way too many locations. It's impossible for you to support all those locations and do it well, no way. Just tell them that you need help or you're outta there, I'm sure they'll hire someone for you 🙂

It seems like you like your job, and retail IT seems like a REALLY good field to be in. I think your company simply needs to hire an additional IT manager, maybe one for the east region and one for the west. You shouldn't have to work your tail to the bone just as part of your regular duties. If you could split your workload with an (equally competent) coworker, I think you'd be much happier.

If your company is opening so many locations, can't they afford an additional IT support staff?

I do dell service sork on the servers in north texas southern oklahoma for guys like you, take a vacation to think about it, you'll feel better when you return. I run into people with this kind of problem all the time. Talk your boss into getting some subcontract help for the stuff that shouldn't require your personal attention at your remote sites.

Talk to your boss about your situation and mention hiring additional help. Explore all avenues before you dust out of your job.

If no agreeable solution is available, leave.

If you have 2 months of Vac. time/pay why not take a month off. Take a look around and see if there is any other work you might like. Then go back to work for 2 weeks. If after 2 weeks you are still unhappy or they don't give you a extra person to help out then put in your 2 weeks notice and cahs out the last mont of Vac. time/pay.
That way you get some time off, look around at job market, and can reflect on job when you do go back.

You should ask your boss to clone you so that you can be in two locations at the same time. How can anyone possible expect to keep the computers on-line when they are on different sides of the country.

You need to hire someone else, you should be sitting at home using VPNs and Riblos for everything. And surf the net when nothing is going on while you get paid. 😕

are you afraid of asking for help, or trying to prove you can do it all???

that many locations, and corporate offices - i would have a helpdesk and at least one more admin.

what's all that good pay and benefits if you can't use it??

I actually do have a "helper" that was hired on last week. But I had to beg and plead to get him. But he's part time and was really only hired on to help do little stuff (swap tapes, install printers & software, start trouble tickets, ect) at the larger corporate location in my abscence. For now that is the best that I can get.

You need to get more help, especially with the extra 30 locations comming up. No job is worth it if you can't enjoy it. I don't mind a little extra hours here and there but too much is too much.

The company is trying to save money, well, you should let it blow up on their face when you walk away.
