I'm considering going to an open mic night

But have no idea if I should bother. I've only been playing for a year and don't want to embarrass myself. Would anyone mind taking a listen to a quick cover I made? I've got no idea where I could upload it so if you wouldn't mind just shooting me a pm I'll email it to you.

Opinions on guitar playing and voice appreciated. =)

Thanks

Don't know if it's the recording but your voice is just a little quiet in that song. Otherwise very nice IMO, you've got a great voice.

Thanks! And yeah, it is pretty quiet but I struggle when I try to raise it for some reason. I don't know if thats something practice can fix but if not I'll just have to stick softish songs.

You should try having some vocal lessons. It's really amazing what training can do to already nice sounding voices.

I tried that out some time back at a local comedy club. It went over well, but the audience only had 20 people, and they were all people I knew. I don't know how comedians do it...scary as hell.

There's a big difference between a comedian and a person that "says funny things."

i did open mic night at a comedy club a few times, and its rather difficult. With a guitar, you can practice and let the music speak for you. It gets nerve racking when people are staring at you.

What would you sing? What style of music do you like singing? I listened to the song, and to be honest, you sound like you have potential... it's pretty lacking in the soul department, but that could be the song. It sounds like you have a good start, just maybe need some coach and more confidence. I would honestly work on the confidence part first... might find that it makes you sound better just believing in yourself. If you watch Idol, Lee Dewyze is a perfect example of that.

Well I'm not exactly sure what there is to gain... but it could be fun I guess.

Confidence in yourself and your music for starters...

You can't beat live exposure, there is no substitute. It will push you to be a better musician.

I used to do open mikes all the time when I was young. It was a blast. They would typically give us 3 songs. I'd do 1 original in-between two popular covers. It let me get feedback on my material and practice performing with little risk.

I don't really have a style I guess. I'd say I generally play kinda poppy music like Jack Johnson, GooGoo Dolls, Lifehouse, etc... but really anything I guess. Im not too hot with a guitar though so it kinda limits my choices.

I totally know what you mean about soul too, when I listen to myself all I hear is the lack of it. I just don't know how to sing with it because every time I try it ends up sounding worse to me. Can't say I watch Idol either, but I'm pretty sure I know what you're talking about.

True enough, wasn't really thinking about doing it for those reasons, just to have a bit of fun.

Guess I should work on a song then since I haven't written any, haha.

OP, try singing with everything you've got. It sounds ridiculous at first but you need to use your diaphragm and really push it out with your chest. One of the harder things to learn is control of your voice and volume. Don't be afraid to sound bad, no one starts up with absolutely perfect presentation, it's refined over time. Singing live for people REALLY helps.

Remember, if top 40 music has taught us anything its that you can hide a lack of skill by whining a lot.
