Well, I'm finally fairly stable and in a decent sized house (with an enormous fenced in two section lawn and backyard) and have always wanted a collie. I grew up with a Collie and an Irish setter, and feel I'm ready for one. I've had cats all my life also due to apt living, and my first cat who is now 14 lives with my parents in Iowa ^_^. Anyway, that was the "spare me the responsibility lectures, I know animals.".

First off, where to find one? I've looked into adoption in the Seattle area. Petfinder, and a few of the rescue agencies didn't yield much. Anyone know of good resources to find one? I don't really need a puppy by any means.

Also, with Collies and long hair breeds, what kind of extra maintanence is necessary (I was young when we had ours) regarding their coat (if any)? Any advice would be wonderfull!

Get an Austrailian Sheppard, they are very similar to Border Collies, but much better (I'm biased)

You'll need to brush and vacuum often. Have you gone to a few shelters and inspected their goods? It's always better to adopt dogs from death row.

Shelties are soooo cute!! One of my friends has one, it's so friendly/adorable.

I want one of those too now.

my mom has owned collies for more than 20 years. she hasn't really done anything special since they have long hair, just kept their coats brushed out.

Puppies are cute, but a monumental pain in the arse. I second getting a pre-owned model from the doggie impound center. They might really appreciate not dying in the pound.
