I'm confused.....

I have a Visiontek GTS 32mb ddr. Today I powered up my comp and went downstairs to eat breakfast. When I came back upstairs, my monitor had two colums of blue on both sides and there were blue lines connecting them. I was like what the ...... happened here?
I rebooted my computer and I got the error code long short short long. I looked that up and it said something about the video card. I plugged in my old one and it worked. I thought that my GTS was dead. I removed the heatsink and removed the artic silver. Just for fun, i placed the heatsink and fan (blue orb) onto the video card and tried to fire it up. It worked.
I applied some new artic silver to the GPU and now it works. With the old artic silver, the video card has been running great for months. How could reapplying the artic silver fix my video card? Can anyone answer?

Thanks.

it could have just been seated improperly, its hard to tell from what you're saying. The GTSs don't get that hot, not like an ultra or pro.

I made sure to seat it properly. i just removed the blue orb, re applied the artic silver and placed the blue orb and it worked.
