Hi, I think there are a lot of Americans here, so I thought why not ask them <see topic> :D
The 4th of november my flight leaves from Amsterdam (Iceland Air rules! :)), and the 11th I'll be back.
I haven't had the time to arrange a place to stay, but I have some phone numbers from cheap hotels I will call today.
Do you have any ideas where to stay, maybe budget (youth-)hotels with a website I can visit or mail?
Any other ideas on what I HAVE to do while I'm there are welcome too.
TIA,
Ruben

go to times square at night. Go on one of those red tour busses, its like $100 probably but you'll see everything. Paying $40 to go to the top of the empire state building or world trade center is a total rip. Eat a hot dog from a cart vendor.

what the f*ck is a youth hotel, I don't know what u guys do in europe but whatever you're talking about it sounds VERY illegal... go clubbing...hit webster hall or club exit... and definitely hit the museums ... if you're bright, take the subways and save some money...if you're lazy, take a taxi ... i mean it is a vacation so indulge a little and having a street hot dog or jalal food is definetly part of the experience... NYC is also a terrible place to buy computer hardware ... but for nice and expensive clothes...its the perfect place... yeah, again make sure you go see the art so you can go home and sound "cultural" ...

A youth hostel is like a cheap hotel w/dorm-like sleeping conditions. There was a hostel on Amsterdam and 104th street, but it moved or closed. Finding a cheap place to stay won't be easy.

i think giuliani (the mayor of the city) shut down the company that owned those red buses, so i'm pretty sure that's not an option anymore. besides, they're a rip off. why pay $100? buy one of those "weekly metrocards", it's only $17 and you can ride the subway for the entire week anywhere u like. oh yeah, don't buy a subway map. i've seen them for sale in bookstores before, but don't buy one. when you buy a metrocard at a token booth, ask for a subway map. they're free.
oh yeah, and don't buy anything from those electronics stores that fill their windows with merchandise and are always advertising a sale. they're all ripoffs. it seems so many tourists make that mistake.
oh and if you plan to see the statue of liberty and ellis island, i recommend you get their early. the line for the ferry gets long pretty fast.

there are so many things to do in nyc, it all depends on (1) what your budget is and (2) what your interests are. here's a couple of things you might want to do if you aren't too fat in the wallet. visit central park, visit the new york stock exchange, see wall street, go to south street seaport, have dim sum in chinatown, to to times square... the list is endless, you go to the metropolitan museum of art, etc, etc. as for hostels, i know there is a hostel on amsterdamn and i believe 84th street in nyc. check it out. good luck.

Stifko described youth hotels quite well, and they are commonplace in Europe- they can be found in almost any city. Before spouting off, pamchenko, try to have a clue what you're talking about.

it doesn't cost 40 damn dollars to go to the top of the ESB and the WTC. WTC was about 13 bucks, and it was worth it. the view is amazing. ESB was ok, but not as good a view. i think it was like 11 bucks or something.
