I'm Building A System and Need Advice.

I have a Tbird 1.33 gHz (with Globalwin 38 something), Gforce3 something, Soundblaster Live, and a NIC card laying around and I have been thinking about building a system using these parts. This would be a secondary system and I will probably use it to burn CDs, processing music and video, possibly hook up a keyboard and use it for composition, and anything else that comes to mind.

I need recommendations on what other components I should get for such a system. Lets say I have a $600 budget for this project.

Thanks

Ok you have 1.3TB, I would say a CBK38 HSF combo, and one of these GeForce3 Ti 500, GeForce3 Ti 200, and original GeForce3 GPU vidio card. This is a very good start.

Now add:

Asus A7V266 about $150.00 retail.

60 GB EIDE Ultra ATA/100 3.5-inch 7200 RPM Hard Drive about $160.00 retail.

Lian Li PC-60 w/ Front USB Port Aluminum PC Case about $165.00 retail, Enermax 350W Whisper Series Power supply $68.00 retail. Or to help stay in the $600.00 budget you can go with a standard mid-tower case and 300W Power supply for about $50.00.

Foppy drive of you choice about $15.00 retail.

liteOn 32x12x40x CDRW about $100.00 retail.

Micron PC Millennia MAX XP2 DDR PC2100 Ram about $70.00 retail.

With the best case and Power Supply the total is $728.00 and about $613.00 with the basic case setup.

These are all average price and if you look around you may find lower, it's a shoppers market in PC parts so get the best. You get what you pay for.

I would go with the following

Epox 8k7a+ motherboard $98
Inwin S523P with 300 watt PSU $60
100 GB Western Digital HDD $173
Floppy Drive $9
Plextor 40x12x40 CDRW 145.00
Pioneer Slot Load DVD ROM $51.00
256 MB Crucial PC2100 DDR $76.00

Total 612.00 Without shipping. These prices are from newegg.com and are about the lowest prices your can expect from a good company.

Trying to set up a video editing system myself. From what I have read, you need (edit-should have) two HDs, one for the OS and programs and one (big) HD just to store video (if you are using a DV or miniDV sys). Is your camcorder equipped with Ieee1394? Then you`ll need an interface card.
THEN you gotta get a proven mobo / sound card combo. If you get a sound card with a Yamaha chip, some IRQs will conflict, at least I had major problems with my mobos with both WinME and XPpro. Of course, it could be the dreaded operator error. I`d start a new thread saying something like "What`s your current audio/video editing comp setup."

Depends on what you want to use the system for mainly when determining what OS to use. If you are into games and want a new OS go with WinXP. If you are into apps and want stability, go with Win2K. WinME or Win98SE are good as well, but you shouldn't have any problems with the other NT OS's since you will have the horsepower and memory to use them.

I wouldn't worry too much about going above 512Megs now since ram is so pricey. Just get more when you "need" it. 1Gig of ram isn't useless, but it's not really needed in most everyday machines.

I would buy a good mobo like an Asus, Abit, Soyo, Epox or Soltek. Get a KT266a chipset board, put 512Megs DDR ram on it, get a cdrw like the Lite On 40x, maybe a DVD drive, a nice 60-80Gig hd, a nice case/psu and you should be good to go.

Mobo ~$100
512Meg ~$150-160
cdrw $106
DVD ~$50
hd ~$100-120
case/psu(antec sx630/635) ~$65-80

cheapest deal: w/o dvd $521 + s/h, w/dvd $571 + s/h
bit better: w/o dvd $566 + s/h, w/dvd $616 + s/h

prices from Newegg but w/o OS or floppy..
