A few friends and I are building a bar for our house next year. Nothing too spectacular just a square bar, we picked up a nice piece of countertop today at the local hardware store, its about 6 feet long, 2 feet deep, pressed wood with nice marble laminate. It was kind of an impulse buy, we actually just went in to buy polyurethane to seal a table we made thats been destroyed by spilt drinks.

Anyhow we've been talking about building a bar for awhile and saw the countertop that was the perfect size and bought it. Unfortunately I go to school in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere and the hardware store doesn't have a lumber yard so I couldn't get the rest of the wood.

currently were going to use the countertop for the bar top, with a 2x4 box frame. I'm assuming that 2x4s are standardly 8 feet long, so I'll need roughly 9 boards to do this (2 Frames, each 4feet high, 6 feet long with 2 ft boards connecting the frame on the top and bottom)

If anyone has any better suggestions feel free to let me know. I've been working with tools all my life but I've never actually built something that I've designed. Also if someone is familiar with wood prices I would like to know how much the lumber is going to cost. If its really expensive my friend has an old picnic table that he said hed let us canibalize. It's not in bad condition but id rather use new wood. Thanks guys.

We had one that came with the house...it's topped with mexican tile and the sides are wainscotted. It's on hidden casters designed to be rolled out on the patio as well. There is a 110V hook up and the bar has outlets and storage behind it.
