Im boycotting Safeway

OutHouse

Lifer
while paying for the stuff at safeway last night i wrote a check. (would have used my debit card but left it in a atm earlier that day and had to block the account). when i handed her the check she asked for my drivers license.

no problem, usual business. but instead of writing down the info on the check like they have and like other places do. she scanned the barcode. :|

Safeway has no business scanning my drivers license. THey have no business if im an organ doner or my personal description sitting in their database.

I wonder if it is even legit to scan a state drivers license?

After the arguement with the manager. i just took my check and left and went to Albertsons with no problems. they took my check and used my drivers license to write down my DL # on the check.

One of the things that pissed me off. The manager said. "sir this is for your protection" well jack ass if i ran my debit card (of wihich i just lost 4 hours before coming here) all i would have to do is run it through the card reader as a credit card and not be asked for any ID. I have been coming to your store since it opened 2 years ago and have NEVER been asked by your checkers to for my ID when i use my debit card.
All i do is swipe it then put it back in my wallet. hummmm.......

AFAIK the bar code just tells the machine the number. So they are getting exactly the same information they always got before when they had to write down your driver's license number on the cheque.

What's on that receipt?

name DOB address... pretty much everything

i dont get mine scanned because im from NY

most people that dont like it just give them their passport for ID and they cant scan that

The bar code, not the magnetic strip? I imagine the barcode is just the drivers license number which you gave to Albertson's, anyway. I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill if you're perfectly willing to give them your number manually but not let them scan it more efficiently.

Data that currently is stored on some states drivers' licenses:
Name
Address
Second Address
Date of Birth
Height
Weight
Sex
Eye Color
Hair Color
Social Security Number
Organ Donor Info
Medical Indicators
Alias Name, Address, Date of Birth or Social Security Number
Electronic Image of Your Signature
Your Electronic Photo Image (KY)
Digital Fingerprints (DC, GA, HI)
Facial Recognition Template (TN)

They have an online tool that can decode some states 2d bar codes for you.

See, and is that info now in a database someplace?? If it is who has access to it and who is it being sold to?

That's the magnetic stripe though, can't store nearly as much info on a barcode.

They hate me at the liquor store since I have a Utah license and since they can't run it through the machine I have to write down all the info which takes forever.

I don't think that either the bar code or the strip have all the info "in" them, they just have the number, which can then be retrieved via a remote connection to a database. So if they have the driver's license number, they have access to exactly the same information that they can get with the bar code or the magnetic strip.

Well, the PA liquor store is state-run so it's not being sold to anyone that it wasn't already sold to by the DMV/License messenger.

I have to say, I think you overreacted here. Your in Colorado which means your magstripe is AAMVA compatible and contains:

Last Name, First Name, Middle Name. Address1, Address 2, City State, Zip. Birthday, Drivers license number, sex height, weight, hair color.

Same information as printed on the front of the card, and when card-readers are used it speeds up the checkout process for everyone.

Sweet, now they have your address and SSN.

I find this sh*t basically annoying. Some cow wanted to check my ID yesterday and my CC for a $13 purchase at home depot (which is fine I guess, although most places don't even ask for the card, let alone ID, and I wasn't buy a freaking tv), and she looked at the card with a UV light for something. My ID is in a window on my wallet which is hard to read, and I never take it out unless in a liqour store. Other people stare at it and have to squint to read it. HAH. If it's something expensive, ok, but who steals a credit card, dresses up nicely, and then buys a hose extension and tape measure from home depot?

The barcode can't possibly contain more than the number.
I could read that with a CueCat scanner that Radio Shack gave away free a few years ago.

If you don't mind them writing it down, why would do mind them scanning it?

If you don't want people to verify who you are, don't use a form of payment that's tied to a particular person that you may or may not be. Did banks stop distributing cash around you?

Did you look at the link I provided? It's not a basic bar code, but a 2d bar code.

an ATM card requires your pin number so that and a check are not really the same thing. Personally I can't stand those stupid club cards. Half of the plastic in my wallet are from those things.

you're tripping...they even scan them at clubs to verify age too. There's no difference between scanning and writing it down. It's better that way because soon it'll be mandatory and easier to fight fraudulant checks because licenses or ids will be required.

Oh well. Some idiots can't count (public school, anyone?) with just a high school diploma so they need the computers to count for them (addicted to calculators, anyone?). Who cares, really. You're up in arms about something extremely trivial.

Weird.. when we went there last night to pick up some beer, the cashier keyed some numbers on our IDs in.. but didnt actually scan it.
