I'm Being Throttled by Netflix!

Netflix is such a joke. Its easier to go down to the video store and rent them.
I get $1 new releases whenever i want.

Where? The Blockbuster near me is always crowded and never has any recent releases available. That's what pushed me to Netflix in the first place.

deja vu. I swear this exact thread was posted sometime before. Maybe its no sleep last nigh catching up to me though...
It has been. I'm venting and adding to my post count.

I hate my local video stores, they've got ZERO selection when it comes to foreign and obscure titles... I was considering starting netflix up again, but this doesnt sound good. what is throttling? even though you've got unlimited rentals, they're not giving them to you?

Netflix tends to 'slow down' when you start returning DVD's 'too quick'. I've had it happen to me....which is why I switched to Blockbuster. At least with BB, I know it's nothing deliberate, they have no consitency to begin with. 🙂

Netflix is known for slowing down their shipping to customers who they deem rent too many videos. So, instead of a one day turnaround, which I have always had until the past two weeks or so, it now becomes a two or three day turnaround. That's throttling. . . .as the posters above me have already said. . .

I just read it in their TOS. It says users with fewer DVDS a month will get priority service. If you get lots of DVDs a month, your shipments may be delayed a day on purpose.

My question though, do they lighten up if you have better plans? Like, if you are someone with a 2 at a time plan returning them as soon as you get them, as opposed to someone who is allowed 4 at a time. The 4 at a time person pays more, so are they more apt to look the other way when you return them quickly?

I'm so lucky to live across the street from a GREAT little video store. Good selection and a knowledgeable friendly staff. They'll even deliver the movies to you. I pay for 40 rentals in advance and it's only $2.50 a rental (cheaper if I buy more in advance). One of the perks of living in NYC.

I never bothered to look at the TOS. But, you're right:

Delivery and Return of Rented DVDs
We reserve the right to allocate and ship DVDs to you in any manner that we, in our sole and absolute discretion, determine. In addition, we will, in our sole and absolute discretion, determine the quantity of DVDs we purchase for any particular title and the level of staffing and number of shipments to be processed at each distribution center. As a result, we may not always send you the first choice from your queue, and we may not ship out your next DVD on the same day that we receive one from you. Our goal is to ship you the DVDs listed highest in your queue. We try to ship you DVDs from the distribution center closest to you so that you get movies quickly. Often, on the same day that we receive a DVD from you, we will ship the next available DVD from your queue. In certain instances, your next available DVD will not ship until the next business day following our receipt of your returned movie. This can occur, for example, when your top choices are not available to you from your closest distribution center or the number of shipments to be processed by the distribution center on that day has been exceeded. When this happens, your DVD will ship on the next business day and may come from an alternate distribution center.

In determining priority for shipping and inventory allocation, we give priority to those members who receive the fewest DVDs through our service. As a result, those subscribers who receive the most movies may experience next-day shipping and receive movies lower in their queue more often than our other subscribers.

Other factors that may affect delivery times, include, but are not limited to, (i) the distance between the distribution center from which your DVD was shipped and your delivery address, (ii) the timing of your placement or adjustment of movies in your queue and (iii) circumstances impacting delivery by the U.S. Postal Service.

We do not process returns or deliveries on Saturdays, Sundays or Holidays. We will send you an e-mail letting you know when we have received a returned movie, and we will also send you another e-mail letting you know when we have shipped your next DVD, including the anticipated time of delivery.

i've been with them for 2+ years and this happens to me occassionally as well. Still better than the local BB however

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but what account level is everyone on? I am on 3 at a time, thinking about 4 at a time since there are so many tv series I want with 5+ disks to a set.

Hes probably talking about a mom and pop shop, not BB.

Throttling is a way of saying you'll be a better customer for them if you don't rent so much or if you go somewhere else.

No big deal, atleast they give you a choice. 🙂
