I'm baffeled.

I'm running XP on a box that's about 5 years old. AMD cpu, ATI graphics card and 4 gigs of ram. When I boot the machine up, I get into windows, but some things don't work. No firefox or thunderbird, and I can't print. After about 15 minutes, the screen redraws and everything works fine. I'm stumped. I've scanned for malware and virus using 2 different products, all came up clean. I tried different memory and that didn't help. I tried shutting down every process that wasn't necessary. No joy. It does the same thing in safe mode.

This has been going on for a month, and my last hair is about to fall out. Any ideas as to what I should try next?

I saw this once and started disabling onboard motherboard components in the bios to try and troubleshoot. When i killed the onboard network it went away. Updating the drivers from the motherboard maker fixed it. Weirded me out.

Create a new administrator account and see if the same thing happens. Sounds like a bad user profile. If it happens on the new account also, reinstall windows.

Update.

Nothing worked. Computer continued to deteriorate over the following day's. I gave up and replaced the cpu, mother board, memory and installed windows 7. Everything works fine for now.

On a side note, I'm not sure I like win7. Lots of things are different from XP, nothing seems to be all that much better. It loads faster, but my XP instillation was from 04, I'm going to guess there was some garbage accumulation.
