Here's a laugh. I just installed windows 2000 on an older pc and in a step to inprove security against viruses, etc., I created a Power User account and managed to lock myself out of logging on again as either Administrator or the other admin account.

Ok, sounds like an opportunity to give linux a try... again.

Fedora C6 is out, but warnings of newness come with it.

What's this I've been hearing about Ubuntu?
I have this really old pc I would like to give my niece (KT133 chipset) with 256mb SDRAM, an old video card, and a 40GB hdd that should be ok for surfin'.

Do I need Xubuntu or can I use Ubuntu? Are these Debian derivatives even the best choice at all?

There is another thread on the OS forum first page about starting out with linux. Why don't you post there?

I say give either Ubuntu 6.06 a try or if you want all the new goodies (and possible bugs) try the just released 6.10. Check UbuntuForums.org for some great info - FAQ's, HowTo's, etc.

Xubuntu might be a little faster as it's more 'light weight' than Gnome. It definitely seemed a little 'snappier' on my laptop but I prefered Gnome so I'm back to using that as my primary.

Xubuntu is great. Even my parents, the most computer illiterate people in the planet, love it and have been using it for over a month now after I installed it on their old P4 🙂

Xfce is a little lacking at times but boy does it fly.

AHHHHHH Come one guys you know we should REALLY be telling the Linux newbies to go to Distrowatch ----------> http://distrowatch.com/ 😉

Start at the top, and just work your way down until you find what you like.

Come on now guys there are HUNDREDS of Linux distros.

Let's put our differences aside, and let people make the choice for themself, after all that is what Linux is all about --------> CHOICE 😀

ALOHA

Good point but IMO a new Linux user should choose a very popular distro simply because if they run into problems there's going to be more info and people available to help.

The top linux distro on distrowatch is, has been for over a year, and will be for the foreseeable future, Ubuntu by a large margin. So by your reasoning, why not just tell them to use Ubuntu? If they are too lazy to even scan the first page of the forum for a thread exactly like this, then who is to say they are not too lazy to go looking through distrowatch?

Even now that there is a sticky on this subject, I bet we still get threads asking this same question.
