I'm at my high school in the alternative (lower security.) and I managed to install Ares/WinMX but they won't connect, anyway to find ports etc. to get them to connect?
I'm not so sure that the Admin has no clue about what is going on. P2P would be one of the first things I would block at a school with an IPS system. Don't want you uninformed youngins downloading illegal music and getting the school in trouble now, would we? 😉
And if your school does use an IPS or IDS you can't get around it.
my advice to your sys admin would be to call the firewall vendor and get help with allowing this traffic if it is really needed. it all depends on the firewall as to what you have to do.
Most people on here will not tell you how to circumvent firewalls or run port scanning utilities on public networks. You should know this before you start calling others morons.
