I'm another one without minidump files created

I've been getting a few BSODs lately that started after several Windows updates. But in trying to pinpoint what might be causing it, I never get a file written to the Minidump directory anymore. I've tried changing the location to store the files thinking it might be some odd permission thing, have double-checked the settings, undid the settings and saved, redid the correct settings and saved, nothing I do is letting the minidump files be created. Sometimes I've been lucky to be sitting there when the BSOD happens and I might catch a little info, but sometimes the PC just locks up where it's completely unresponsive and I need to reset the PC to recover as the only option.

So first things first... how can I get the minidumps created for a BSOD again? They used to write just fine, the last one I have is from May 14, 2015, and then after that point they just stopped being created. It might just be coincidence (but I'm thinking not at this point), but May 15th is the date the Windows 10 pre-update patch was installed on my system.

System is Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, 16 GB ram; hard drive is WD 2TB Green drive, less than a year old, but I did run chkdsk /f, it found no errors. I've run sfc /scannow and found no errors (after removing some recent Windows updates that have been known to show false corrupt file messages). I've run Memtest86 for 3 passes, no errors. Video card is GTX970 and very new (the old card was a GTX760 but it wasn't replaced because of any problems, just wanted an upgrade and switched the old card to a 2nd PC). It's never one program that causes it, the BSOD or freeze can happen at any time with any combination of programs loaded.

When I dig through the Event Viewer for anything that might look suspicious about what caused the BSOD or lockup, the most that I've found is a generic "The restart at x:xx time was unexpected," and no errors or warnings around that time.

Any suggestions on how to get the minidump files created again, even registry checks or edits? This is starting to drive me crazy.

It's possible for severe hardware problems to prevent minidump creation. But, do you have a system-managed pagefile on the primary (C-colon) drive? If not, that might be why you aren't seeing minidumps. If you have Samsung Magician software on your system, it may have "optimized" your pagefile settings, and impaired mini-dump creation.

My pagefile is managed by Windows and is on the C: drive, also visually confirmed there is a pagefile.sys where it should be. I don't use any Samsung Magician software on my system, but if that's for SSD drives, I don't have any, just old fashioned Western Digital 2 TB SATA drives.

One way to tell would be the blue screen itself. Do you see the counter at the bottom of the page for dump of physical memory, or is the blue screen a flash followed by a reboot?

If it's the latter, it may be a power problem.

I have the computer set to not restart on its own, so if it's a BSOD and not a lockup, I sometimes catch the error numbers, but they're usually different. The one I had last night was IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL 0x0000000A and I could see the full screen. Often though the top part scrolls past so I can only see the bottom error code and not the top part nor any driver mentioned. Unless there's a way to scroll that info back up that I don't know about? That would certainly help a bit.

So you are getting freezes and blue screens, that says something.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is usually a driver. Might want to look at Windows Update and Programs and Features to see what recent driver changes you have had.

I know recent Nvidia drivers (which appear on Windows Update as optional) have been giving people issues.

Nvidia has released a hotfix for these:

Thanks for that info, I'll install those drivers now. I update my graphic drivers quite often, so Nvidia is certainly a possibility for the BSODs and freeze ups. Latest Kaspersky version is also a possibility, I might try going back to last year's version if it still continues.

I'd still like to get minidumps written again though as they should be, having all the information to analyze would certainly be easier.
