I totally overlooked that my landlord didn't cash the check for last month's (Apr) rent which I gave him at the beginning of that month. So I checked my account online today and found that he just cashed/deposited last month's check and this month (May) on Monday. If I would have remember I would of transferred some money from my savings to cover. This $1200 brought my checking account below the balance. So I got an overdraft fee of $25 for that and 5 other small purchases for a total of $150 in overdraft charges. Oh fvck me!

Sounds like your bank sucks. This has happened to me before and if I don't have enough in my checking account to cover the amount they will pull the rest from the savings account. No fees.

I would suggest calling the manager of your bank. If you are in good standing with them they might waive the fees.

Where did the money for last month's rent to though? I'm assuming that since you gave him a check, it was in there originally, so it should've still been in there?

Why do you write checks that you don't have the balance to cover? Don't you keep track of all the checks you write? You should know at all times what your balance would be if all the checks you've written were cashed.

They only charged us 1 overdraft fee ($30) for being under... even though there were further charges that put us further below... this is WaMu.

Happened to me once with WaMu. After that I requested the savings to be linked to checking. They simply transfer the amount needed and charge one-time fee of $10

Similar thing happened to me before. The kicker is that even if you go make a deposit, the bank will take care of each overdraft violation first.

For example.

$100 balance.
- $200 check
--------------
- $100 balance

- $5 charge
- $5 charge
+ $200 deposit
- $10 charge
- $10 charge
---------------
$70 balance

But you will be hit with the charges for each of the $5 and $10 charges first.

I always assume the balance in my checking account is depleted by the amount of a check as soon as I write it to avoid this sort of thing. That being said, my wife writes most of the checks and we have a credit line thing going on at our credit union that covers any overdrafts w/o fees.

uh balance your checkbook? Even if they arent cashing the checks you count them as cashed. This will keep you from overdrafting.

You haven't been in enough of these checking account threads, Genx87. What you said is blasphemy. Apparently, through the mistical powers of ATOT, ATOT readers are immune to checking problems and do not need to balance their checkbook. All they have to do is look online at the current balance, and they can always write checks up to that balance. 100s of ATOT threads and posts all say that same thing.

Of course, things like late cashed checks and bank errors are impossible, so we don't have to consider them.

(I hope you see the sarcasm in the only thread I'll probably ever agree with you, Genx87.)

You should get over draft protection. They just charge any overdraft to a CC

The bank might be fine..he just doesn't have any sort of o/d protection set up. :p $3.00/transfer with my bank..a lot better than $22/each. :Q

Definitely worth a shot.

A bank will do everything possible to cash the biggest check first. I think it's total crap but that way you bounce as many checks as possible and have to pay the highest overdraft fee possible.

It doesn't hurt your credit but sure dings your wallet.

I got stung by WaMu a few years back.

I think what they do is offer you very remedial overdraft protection at first and then after some time they cover more. I remember it being something lame like $100 overdraft protection that then went to $1000. Granted it wasn't a rent check since that would be more.

online buill pay FTW

your bank mails the check, and deducts $ form your acct. if it doesnt get cashed within 90 days, the check is void, and the $ goes back into your acct. (the check says void within 90 days with the expiration date on it.)

ymmv depending on the online billpay you use

Go into a branch and talk to a representative. You can often talk them out of overdraft fees if you explain the situation, especially if it's a first time.
