I didn't crush the core or anything on my PIII, but my screwdriver slipped and something weird happened to where I had to take the HSF apart and redo the clip. I'm an idiot. :(

However, I'm installing Windows on it right now. Is 35 okay for an idle PIII 700? I'm using an Alpha PAL6035. I was expecting the temp to be less, but I don't know.

My case temp was being reported as 25. I'm using arctic silver. Also, I assumed that you're supposed to have the fan on the Alpha blow away from the heatsink since I was using the shroud. Is that true?

CPU: 37 Case: 29 as of the first reboot.

edit: The clip on the Alpha was a bear to deal with. I guess I was expecting it to be more like installing a FOP32. I kind of went about it like that which was a mistake. I ended up taking the shroud and fan off and installing just the heatsink. Then I put the shroud and fan back on.

those temps seem about right. If you wanted lower you should of got a peltier but thats a whole different story.

Well, I'm a little hesitant about going with TEC's. Maybe after I enjoy my new CPU for a bit. :) Actually, I kind of want to mess around with water cooling, but after shelling out for the mobo and cpu, I'm a little short on cash.

I thought slot was cool when it first came out, but now I've come to think the socket is the better design (I kinda have both right now w/ the slocket). With a slot you dou have the advantage of being able to get the heatsink on before sticking the processor in though. Still, socket is cheaper to make, and seems to be more logical (a chip the size of a thumnail just doesn't need to be in a package the size of an SNES cartridge).

I like the slot design better from a ease of use standpoint. When I am handling a socket CPU, I am always nervous about static, bending pins, cracking the core, etc. But with my slot Athlon, Ijust grab it by the sides, put on the heat sink, and snap it into the slot, no worries.

I had a Bucket - O - Fun getting that freakin' clip to work right on my Alpha PAL 6035.
Finally found out I was doing it bass ackwards. Got it turned around and while still not friendly, at least it is working.
I have a case temp (mobo temp) of 30c and cpu under 100% use is at 32c.
I also have extra fans sucking in room temp air right above the cpu and exhausting warm air out the top of the case.
For air cooling it's all about CIRCULATION people!!! In with the good and out with the bad!

I hate socket a's too. they look so flimsy.. of course, its more economical

the athlons slot a's are like a brick and pIII's slot 1s are coool. eh. just preference. HSF's for both of the are easier to put on too... no gay clips like the C.orb or anythinglike that.

ah well
