I'm amazed by how much ink that inkjet printers apparently waste

I've just installed a "printer potty" for a customer (the printer's reservoir was full and the customer wanted this instead of a new printer), so I can see how much ink gets wasted during a cycle of switching the printer on and printing two Windows test pages.

I swear that more ink has ended up in the reservoir than on the paper!

Depends on what kind of printer..

Continuous (CIJ) or Drop-on-demand (DOD)..

I prefer HPs DOD.. My $37 refurb HP F4280 is almost 5 yrs old now and has printed more pages than I care to admit. Reliability & no mess inside after hundreds of cartridges is why..

still have a photo one I use just for photos. I'm pretty sure in the long run I'm at worse breaking even with all the 5x7 and 8x10 photos I've made.

The new ink jets are leaps and bounds ahead of what they were a few years ago. At the consumer level they are a better deal than the lasers. When you move up to business grade then the lasers are the way to go. I made the switch over 5 years ago when I finally got fed up with how much ink I was going through and I don't plan to ever go back. My color laserjet has been the best printer that I've ever owned and I get 7500 pages from a black toner but it won't print a photo like an inkjet.

Have a color laser for most everyday things, a color photo inkjet for photos, and a dedicated canon scanner for good image scans. Giving a blank inkjets sucks is a rather wide a inappropriate statement.
